Weekend Bubble Watch: Winners and Losers

T.R. PetersonCorrespondent IFebruary 8, 2009

In Friday’s edition I received several comments for putting Wisconsin and Cincinnati as bubble team “winners.” Both teams continued their progress over the weekend with critical wins against Penn St. and Georgetown respectively.

Kansas St. is a team that I have added to my list of bubble teams. The Wildcats have won five straight games including wins over Missouri, Texas, and Texas A&M.

It’s officially time to put Notre Dame on the “no chance” list after getting drubbed by UCLA. Other teams that are headed in the same direction include Baylor and St. Mary’s. Baylor has lost five straight games while the Gaels have lost three of four without Patty Mills.

Here are the weekend winner and losers. As always, comments are welcome.

Note: Next edition will be published on Friday morning. All RPI and SOS numbers are taken from realtimerpi.com.

I mentioned the Wildcats two weeks ago and since then they have run their win streak to five, including finishing a sweep of the Oregon schools with a win at Oregon Saturday. Arizona has improved to 6-5 in the Pac-10. We’ll find out a lot more about the Wildcats in the next week as they host both USC and UCLA.

Virginia Tech

The Hokies got back on track by beating N.C. St. on Sunday. The win stopped a two game losing streak and should give them some momentum as their next three games are against the bottom of the ACC. The Hokies will need them all before finishing with a very tough final five games against Florida St. (2), Clemson, Duke, and North Carolina.

S. Carolina

The Gamecocks didn’t get a huge win in beating Georgia but it was an important win. S. Carolina needs to keep pace in the SEC East and can’t afford any hiccups against teams like the Bulldogs-just ask Tennessee.

Other winners: Mississippi St., Wisconsin, San Diego St., Tulsa, Kansas St., Wisconsin-Green Bay, Cincinnati

As tight as the bubble picture is the Rebels couldn’t afford to lose at New Mexico. UNLV is now fifth in the MWC and that won’t get them any at-large offers.

Texas A&M

The Aggies had a chance to put themselves in good shape by beating Kansas St. Instead A&M is in grave danger. They must get a win at Baylor if they want to remain in the at-large discussion.

Penn St.

Penn St. dropped a golden chance after losing to Wisconsin on Sunday. The Nittany Lions could have positioned themselves at the top of the Big Ten and given themselves some room for error with their upcoming schedule. Instead they must go on the road for three of four against the top half of the Big Ten.

Other losers: Baylor, Michigan, Providence, St. Mary’s, Oklahoma St.
