Times are tough for Marco van Basten at Ajax. Having picked up just four points in their last four matches, the Amsterdammers have seen their title challenge quickly dissolve, presently (before Sunday’s match with Vitesse) trailing leaders AZ Alkmaar by a massive 14 points.
After last weekend’s home defeat at the hands of Heerenveen one Ajax fan could not hold back his emotions as he was caught on camera heckling coach van Basten as he exited the field of play.
And on Thursday there was a sense of deja vu at the Ajax training ground, as several dozen supporters present to watch their team train from the sidelines could not help but get in another verbal exchange with the Dutch legend, eventually storming the training pitch and demanding explanations as to why their team has been playing so badly in recent weeks.
According to reports, only after van Basten and Ajax’s Urby Emanuelson confronted the group face-to-face was training resumed, as the bad feelings around the Amsterdam club appeared to intensify.
