Hurricanes and Lightning Move Three Players, Draft Pick in Quiet Trade

Matthew GilmartinSenior Analyst IFebruary 8, 2009

The Carolina Hurricanes and Tampa Bay Lightning agreed to a trade that sent LW Jussi Jokinen to the Hurricanes in exchange for LW Josef Melichar, D Wade Brookbank, and a 2009 fourth-round draft pick.

Jokinen has 16 points on six goals and 10 assists in addition a minus-eight plus-minus.  He has switched a couple of European pro teams in Finland and the NHL's Dallas Stars and Tampa Bay Lightning since 2001. Jokinen has played for an NHL team the past two years.

In his best NHL season Jokinen tallied 55 points in 82 games on 17 goals and 38 assists.

The Canes must think Jokinen can provide scoring on the third or fourth line.

Brookbank is a pure enforcer. The only thing he's ever done much of is pick fights and pick up penalty minutes. Brookbank is a nice acquisition for the Lightning, who have racked up a ton of penalty minutes, but few of them are majors that show team toughness.

Melichar was rendered inactive after being traded.
