After beating Bernard, many boxing fans could imagine Joe giving him another shot. It was a money fight after all. Time went by, and no such thing was even on horizon.
People knew that Joe was getting ready to retire pretty soon, but they expected another big fight. If that mega fight was to happen, it would most likely be a rematch against Hopkins then Dawson. But now that Joe is calling it quits, what’s the next, or possibly last fight for Hopkins ?
One option would be to fight Chad Dawson. Unfortunately, Hopkins already stated that he will not take that fight. It’s a shame, because it would be a very legitimate fight as far as the health of boxing goes. It would be a tough fight for both guys, but I can see Hopkins pulling it off. Not by a knockout, but by a very close decision. If there would be a knockout or even a knockdown in that fight, it would most likely be by Dawson.
Another option, with a little weight play, would be Paul Williams. Many would pick Williams to win this fight, due to Paul’s activity level.
I think that this would be a very hard pick for me. My heart says that Hopkins would win this fight. My logic tells me that Williams would get the UD. I just don’t think that Hopkins would be able to do what he wanted in that fight, because it is very hard to get close to Williams, let alone land a clean combo. Williams is fast and fights well moving back.
Last and least, would be Jones. I really hope, with all my heart, that this fight is never even considered. I am sure, that sooner or later it just might be.
It’s a weird fight for Hopkins. The reason is because he knows that he will win, and make millions of dollars, but his reputation would be permanently scarred by even taking this fight. It would be even worse then Calzaghe taking the Jones fight. And of course for Roy, it would be pure suicide.
In any case, lets hope Hopkins can take a good challenging fight, win that’s fight and then retire. At this point in time, he is one of the most respected fighters of all time. There is no need for him to fight any longer. He made money, and polished his name, time to go get involved in some other aspect of boxing, maybe promoting.
