Didier Drogba Transfer Rumours: Latest News on the Ex-Chelsea Star
Didier Drogba has played his final match for Chelsea. Where will he play next?
Since calling time on his Chelsea career last month, Drogba, 34, has been linked with clubs from almost every corner of the earth.
Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua have long appeared to be Drogba's most likely destination, but recently the rumor mill has linked the big Ivorian with teams from Europe and the Middle East.
All the latest news is inside.
Middle Eastern Adventure?
Word leaked over the weekend that United Arab Emirates club Al Wasl could be plotting a move for Didier Drogba.
According to Ashley Hammond at Gulfnews.com, Al Wasl and Drogba were in "serious talks." Hammond cited a club source who claimed Drogba's salary demands would not keep Al Wasl from signing him.
As most will recall, Argentine legend Diego Maradona manages Al Wasl. According to the Daily Mail, Maradona said: "Who in the world would not want Drogba? Every team would love to have such a player in their ranks."
Quickly, however, quotes attributed to Maradona (at Tribal Football) indicated Drogba would cost too much for Al Wasl.
Didier Drogba and Jose Mourinho enjoyed a productive professional relationship at Chelsea, where together they won two league titles and one FA Cup.
Perhaps it's no surprise, then, that the gossip pages have been full of speculation over a Drogba move to Mourinho's Real Madrid.
According to the Daily Mirror, Mourinho is plotting "an amazing offer" for Drogba. Unfortunately, at this time we can only speculate whether the "amazing offer" is better or worse that the "frickin' sweet" wage package Drogba would reportedly earn in China.
Other than the "amazing offer" talk, the Mirror doesn't really say much else.
Bound for Barca?
According to The Sun's Antony Kastrinakis, Barcelona "want to" offer Drogba a two-year contract worth as much as €5 million per season, including incentives.
Kastrinakis cites a club source, but this article was published in mid-May. Few sources have linked Barca and Drogba since then.
Go East, Young Man
Nouveau-riche Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua are the heavy favorites to land Drogba's signature, with some sources claiming a £300,000-per-week offer is on the table.
The latest word comes from Shenhua's new manager, Sergio Batista, who is saying that Shenhua's officials are still trying to land Drogba.
According to Goal.com, Batista said: "The people from the club do the best things to get Drogba here. I think every coach in the world wants to get Drogba on the team and I hope that everything is OK."
