The Penalty Shootout Circus: A Solution?
Annually we see the same old debacle of penalty shootouts which I find tediously unsatisfactory. During World Cups, for example, we get the combined weight of a nation resting on the shoulders of the unsuccessful players. Chelsea fans will not need to be reminded of John Terry's slipping at the crucial moment.
I have considered the issue long and hard to find a fairer and more satisfactory conclusion to the dreadful stalemates. It is not uncommon for inferior sides to deliberately target a draw and they can come away with a win via a shootout.
Picture this, the FA Cup final with Manchester United and Chelsea—normal time is scintillating football but they cancel each other out. Extra time is more of the same with opportunities going begging from both sides.
At this point my idea kicks in. Make your last substitutions followed by a 15 minute break then bring out the sides minus the goalkeepers! The attacking side would prevail as goals will come from deep in your own half, Beckham style.
Negative sides will pay the price with a golden goal sealing it.
That in a nutshell would provide an electric, edge of your seat conclusion to the big occasion. Individual players would be spared the unenviable blame that is attached to the penalty shootout.
