Brett Favre Retirement: It's About Time!

KP WeeMar 6, 2008

Thank goodness. It's about time that this announcement came.

I had refrained from commenting on this retirement at the time because I wasn't sure if this was for real yet. There was of course, the possibility of a retraction, which has been seen before in pro sports.

Roger Clemens, Mario Lemieux, Michael Jordan.

All had "retired" before, but kept coming back.

In this case, the official retirement announcement broke two days earlier, but Thursday morning was the final goodbye.

And nope, the news conference on Thursday did not contain any retraction, but rather the confirmation that it was all over indeed.

Thankfully.

Yes, there was a big deal made out of this retirement, because the athlete in question has always been worshipped by fans and the media alike.

Yes, one championship. Three MVP awards.

All the records that were broken. All those games in a row.

Oh yes. That was all everyone talked about.

No one wants to talk about how that bad pass he threw in overtime—which led to the other team scoring right after—ended up costing his team the conference championship game.

No one wants to talk about how ten years earlier, he had blown a chance to drive for the potential game-tying score in the sport's title game when he had the ball back in the final minutes.

No one wants to talk about how instead of being benched for his team's poor starts and finishes—like his peers playing on other teams—he kept getting the ball back game after game, season after season, just because of his name.

Had he played in a city like New York, he would have been crucified for any or all of the above. He would have been benched, traded, released, you name it.

Yet, he got a free pass throughout his career.

And finally, this career is over.

Good riddance.

And I don't even want to bother mentioning his name.

Those who know me know who I am referring to.

Anyone who hasn't been living under a rock for the last few days or so obviously does too.

I just won't even mention the guy's name.

Thank goodness. It's about time he's done.
