This offseason the Mets mainly focused on re-tooling their bullpen. The sideshow was their starting rotation.
There were about four guys who looked to fit the Mets' rotation. I know I changed my mind at least 10 times on what pitcher is best for the Mets, and I know a lot of you other Mets' fans had the same feeling, too.
As of this week, the New York Mets re-signed their old starter, Oliver Perez. Ollie was signed to three-year, $36 million deal.
The signing might've been a little pricey, but not as risky as plan B, Ben Sheets.
I was one of the people who wanted Ben Sheets in the Mets' starting rotation. He just looked like the better pitcher. The only problem with Sheets is that he is very injury-prone. The guy is like a twig, he can get snapped by the slightest force any minute.
My excuse for Sheets' weakness was, "he pitched 198 innings last year." That was true, but no one could've overlooked how injury-prone he was.
Sheets' had been talking with multiple teams including the Rangers over the past month, and he agreed to a deal with Texas late last week.
All that stood in the way of Sheets' becoming a Ranger was his physical. Like any Texas Rangers' fan should be, I bet they were terrified that he was not going to pass it, because of some tweak in his butt bone.
As we all pretty much know, Ben Sheets isn't going back to Texas anytime soon, because, you guessed it, he didn't pass his physical. Sheets' had a torn flexor tendon in his elbow.
The Rangers' general manager is "not optimistic" that the Rangers and himself will continue to pursue Sheets.
So, the Mets caught a lucky break in not signing Ben Sheets. They stuck with their man Ollie Perez, and I am more glad than ever with this signing.
