It appears the honeymoon is officially over with our very own soft spoken, harmless looking, Olympic great—Michael Phelps. Had only he been as slick as Willy, he need only utter a few words of comment, "I did not inhale". But, Phelps was caught with his pants up, but with a bong firmly pressed against his lips.
Only in a world as superficial as our own does something like this become a major hit (no pun intended) to our own egos. Once again, we are shown that even those we consider infallible are never so. I cannot say I'm relieved to see him smoking pot, but in no way am I surprised. One day, we may comprehend that even perfection has its limits.
The facade around us is constantly crumbling as truth shines its ugly light into our minds. Phelps is the latest victim of perfectionism and I can only hope he puts on blinders and earplugs and lives the rest of his life without an apology.
We should all take a step back and realize that a role model can screw up too. Not to mention, role models belong in the home, the community, your church, or your school.
Those who don't have parents or family should be taught by their guardian that it is alright to look up to a public figure or personality, but originality, honesty, and hard work are the ultimate tools for blazing a path to greatness.
Just ask Michael Phelps.
