According to breaking news on Yahoo! Sports, Johnny Tapia was found dead in his house in Albuquerque, New Mexico on Sunday, May 27, 2012.

After trying his best to strive for success in a life full of murder and sadness, Tapia was able to climb the ranks of championship boxing, and with this ferocious style he became a memorable world champion.

A quote from his autobiography titled Mi Vida Loca shows that while he seemed untouched, Tapia’s life was far from comfortable:

My name is Johnny Lee Tapia. I was born on Friday the 13th. A Friday in February of 1967. To this day I don't know if that makes me lucky or unlucky. When I was eight I saw my mother murdered. I never knew my father. He was murdered before I was born. I was raised as a pit bull. Raised to fight to the death. Four times I was declared dead. Four times they wanted to pull life support. And many more times I came close to dying.

Over the years he had accumulated an army of fans, and we are all sad to see him go. While he was not a young fighter, his spirit always showed, and we will remember him for his ability to fill seats and create tremendous excitement in every arena he ever fought in.
