Top 10 Rivalries in Sports
I know this has already been done, but this is my take on the top 10 sports rivalries. From hockey to baseball to football rivalries all mean the same thing cheering for "your" team and booing and jeering the "other" team. No matter where you are you can always make it to the TV for the games.
The rivalries inspire, anger and enlighten almost everyone who watches them.
10: Detroit Red Wings vs. Colorado Avalanche
These two teams have a real distaste for each other. Now, it's not nearly as volatile as it was in the late '90s (think Claude Lemieux vs Darren McCarthy) but its still a good old fashioned barn burner whenever they meet,
9: UNC vs. DUKE
Two of the most, if not most popular teams in college basketball. The Heels and Devils always are in the hunt for the ACC title and perennial favorites for the national title.
It's just a short trip down tobacco lane, but it's never an easy one
8: Canada vs. Russia
This one became famous back in 1972 in a small eight-game series. A rivalry built on blood, sweat, tears and pride. Watching these two teams will turn the casual fan into a rabid super fan, if only for a few hours.
7: Michigan Wolverines vs. Ohio State
When thinking Big Ten football you're hit smack in the face with the Michigan Wolverines and the Ohio State Buckeyes. And thats just how they play smash mouth football against one and another as if its a matter of live and death.
If you ask the players involved thats just what it is.
6: Tiger Woods vs. Phil Mickelson
Ranked No. 1 and 2 in the world for what seemed like forever, Tiger and Lefty always raise their game against each other. An undying will to beat each other makes this one rivalry to enjoy for years to come.
5: Chicago Cubs vs. Chicago White Sox
Nothing says rivalry more then a city divided. This classic battle pits the north side against the south side in what is invariably a annual series for bragging rights.
4: Canada vs. USA
It doesn't matter if its junior, men's or women's hockey. this is a battle for national pride and it always produces instant classics. Think Salt Lake City 2002.
3: Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Baltimore Ravens
These two teams hate each other. They see a lot of each other as they are both in the AFC north and to make things worse the Steelers went through the Ravens in the AFC Championship this year en route to a record sixth Super Bowl title.
2: Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees
Only two things need to be said here. Babe Ruth and David Ortiz.
1: Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Montreal Canadiens
One of the oldest rivalries in sports: the Leafs vs. The Habs. It doesn't matter if game is at the Bell Centre or the ACC these two teams bring it every time they meet. You just cant argue with a classic.
