Just reported moments ago by WWE.com, current WWE Superstar Chris Jericho has been suspended indefinitely for denigrating the Brazilian flag at a WWE live event in Sao Paulo on May 24. Below is the official statement from WWE’s website:
“Chris Jericho has been suspended indefinitely due to an irresponsible act of denigrating the Brazilian flag at a WWE live event in São Paulo on May 24. WWE has apologized to the citizens and the government of Brazil for this incident.”
During a match against WWE Champion CM Punk, Jericho grabbed the flag and proceeded to crumple it before kicking it out of the ring.
The local law enforcement intervened and gave Jericho a choice to apologize to those in attendance or face incarceration. The former undisputed champion apologized and the live event continued as scheduled.
Jericho has spoken with WWE.com and had the following to say:
“I made a bad judgment call in the course of entertaining [WWE] fans in Brazil. I apologized to the people in the crowd for showing disrespect.”
Jericho emphasized that he conducted the actions for entertainment purposes only and will accept the consequences for his actions.
The news comes at a time where the former WWE Champion was slated to be involved in a program with one of WWE’s most beloved babyface characters, Randy Orton. While this angle appears to be off the table for now, not much detail is known as this is still developing news.
For all intents and purposes, it is possible that the former world champion may not return to television any time soon as it has been heavily rumored for quite some time that Jericho would be taking a brief hiatus from the wrestling ring to tour with his band, Fozzy.
According to PWInsider, Jericho was almost arrested as authorities at the event were upset and at one point, it appeared Jericho was going to be taken into custody. Cooler heads prevailed and he was not charged by police.
Jericho has expressed further regret on his Twitter page, writing “Just for the record, I love Brazil and wish we could’ve spent more time here. Beautiful country!” He then jokes that he is currently scrubbing toilets in the WWE Executive washroom.
It must have been a very frustrating week for the former world champion who stated earlier in the week that he and the a majority of the WWE Raw crew experienced traveling delays which left everyone in a major panic mode. Sleeping arrangements were difficult to come by and a WWE live event had to be cancelled.
In a final update, WWE announced Friday evening that Chris Jericho’s suspension will last 30 days. This would make the June 25th edition of RAW the earliest possible date that Jericho would be eligible to return on television.
Furthermore, Jericho has stated via Twitter that he has left the WWE’s tour of South America and landed in a Miami airport early this morning.
