Milwaukee Brewers closer John Axford is doing all he can to keep this season interesting for himself, fans and media.

After blowing a save two weeks ago, Axford left a note for the media explaining that he wasn't available for postgame interviews because his wife had gone into labor.

Since then, Axford has pitched five consecutive scoreless appearances. That kind of streak might make most pitchers hesitant to mess with anything.

But Axford clearly isn't most pitchers. On Thursday, he shared a bold decision with the baseball world via Twitter. He was shaving his mustache and beard.

The Brewers stopper obviously decided he needed to make a change, maybe to shake his team up, his fellow relievers up. Or he was just bored on the team's off-day. Regardless of the reason, five months' worth of facial hair growth got the scissors.

Not shaving his face completely smooth might have been a wise choice. A closer still has to look tough, after all.

But if Axford blows his next save opportunity or gets crushed in his next appearance, it won't be too difficult to find a scapegoat.

Or should we say, scapegoatee?

Axford_beard_original Might as well draw a chalk outline around that goatee. (@JohnAxford)
