The needs of the New York Knicks are at times exaggerated by the nature of their breathless media coverage and are, at other times, ignored due to that very same mechanism. They aren’t allowed to fade, change and grow like a normal NBA team, but see every development accentuated to a patently ridiculous degree.

Of course, all the exaggeration in the world doesn’t change the fact that the Knicks aren’t an elite team just yet—a point made all too clear by their emphatic first-round exit. They have needs to address in the offseason (just like every other NBA club), and considering the logjam on New York’s books, it may be particularly difficult to address those needs.

Carmelo Anthony isn’t going anywhere, Amar’e Stoudemire’s contract makes him almost untradeable and Tyson Chandler appears to be a building block for this team for the foreseeable future. Yet there’s still realistic room for improvement elsewhere on the Knicks roster, even if it may not come in the most obvious form.
