Notre Dame Football: Breaking Down the Position Battle at Cornerback
All eyes have been on the Fighting Irish quarterback battle this spring as four players fight to be the starter entering 2012. Gunner Kiel, Andrew Hendrix, Tommy Rees and Everett Golson are locked into a battle for the position, and plenty of attention has been paid to the quarterback carousel. However, quarterback is not the only position where the Fighting Irish have more questions than answers.
At the cornerback spot, the Irish lost Gary Gray and Robert Blanton, which has left them quite green on the edge. Five players will be battling to get the jobs heading into 2012, and that means plenty of uncertainty heading into fall camp. While Bennett Jackson and Lo Wood are listed atop the depth chart after spring, Josh Atkinson, Cam McDaniel and Jalen Brown are hot on their tails in competing for a role within the defense.
How this battle shakes out will speak plenty to how successful Notre Dame’s defense can be at the corner position. If the Irish are forced to have Jamoris Slaughter play at the nickel or corner spot, they are losing a quality contributor at safety, and that is not a good thing.
