NL East 2009: Phils Or Mets?

kev schwoContributor IJanuary 29, 2009

With a little more than 13 days left until pitchers and catchers report, the Phillies quiet off season has fans wondering if they're gonna see the same world series caliber team they did last year. the last two season the Phillies have beaten out the Mets to clinch the NL east.

The Mets seem to fall apart and give up their lead in games and in the standings as October approaches.

Late inning pitching was a big factor in most of their defeats this past season. The Mets bullpen blew 20 saves a franchise record.

They have certainly taken care of that with the signing of RP Francisco Rodriguez as well as Feliciano and J.J.

The Phillies on the other hand never start off good in fact they are one of the worst April teams in the game. Some how the phightins have been finding away to pull it out the last couple of seasons.

With Raul Ibanez taking Pat Burrells spot he doesn't have as much power, but i think the Phils will produce more runs. Ibanez puts up about 20 more RBIs than Pat the bat his avg. is slightly better than Burrells and their OBP is about the same.

They both play the same sluggish D.

Ibanez is about the only move the Phillies made this off season besides signing Moyer the SP in his mid 40s who led the Phillies in wins their championship season.

With Philadelphia having pretty much the same team as they did last year and Mets fixing their few problems i think the Mets will come out on top in the 2009 season.

But as the late great Casey Stengel said: "Never make predictions, especially about the future".
