Picking a long shot in the Kentucky Derby is always a fun thing to do when betting on a horse. The problem though is picking which long shot to bet on.
This year's race seems as wide open as ever and is a good time to pick long shots. Here are some horses that you should keep your eyes on when making your bets.
Rousing Sermon (50-1)
What seems to be working against Rousing Sermon is the fact that he does not have a great pedigree for the Kentucky Derby. However, this is a horse that has the stamina to finish strong in this type of race. During his last four races he has not finished worse than fifth and will be an interesting bet.
If you plan on having a long shot included in your bets, use Rousing Sermon as a show bet or use him in a box trifecta. Having a long shot in a trifecta will always bring out big money and it will wise to use him in your bet.
Trinniberg has won both races it has entered this year. However, both races were sprints and not close to be 10 furlongs like the Kentucky Derby.
He will likely be the pace-setter for the race and is not expected to close well. I think jockey Willie Martinez will be able to control a tempo of the race that will fit his horse's style.
Trinniberg's odds don't seem to fit his chances. He is a good choice for the win and has the best chance to win out of all the long shots. He will be able to contend all the way to the end.
Here is a horse that is getting better and better with each performance.
Jockey Luis Contreras will be riding him for the Derby, and expect him to be a mid-pack rider and make a run at the last turn. In three races this year Prospective has finished first, second and sixth.
Prospective is another good trifecta bet and will be in contention for the top three through the whole race. I don't think Prospective has a good chance of winning, but he can easily show. A straight trifecta with Prospective at show is a smart bet.
Good luck, bettors, and make sure you bet wisely when picking a long shot.
