With National Signing Day just one week away, it's time for the remaining prizes of the Class of 2009 to sign on the dotted line.
Signing day is a time where great recruiting classes can be made and others destroyed. As we saw last year, Miami and Alabama used National Signing Day to launch their successful seasons, while teams who miss out on top recruits may have a bad year.
There has been a call for an early signing period, but this one is the most important. Feb. 4 is when we will find out where these top recruits are going, and which teams will have a huge impact next year in the college football world. Here are my prediction as to who goes where:
Quarterbacks: AJ McCarron
With the Tajh Boyd saga finally coming to an end, AJ McCarron is the best quarterback left on the board. McCarron, who committed to Alabama in May, has loosened the reins and is taking a look at Miami, Ole Miss, Oklahoma and Tennessee. McCarron is a pro-style QB and a very good decision-maker, throwing 57 touchdown passes and only nine interceptions in three years as a starter.
PREDICTION: Alabama Crimson Tide
Quarterback: Raymond Cotton
Cotton was an Auburn commitment, but left after Tommy Tubberville was fired. Cotton is down to two schools: Kansas State and Ole Miss.
Kansas State needs Cotton in the worst way. With Josh Freeman leaving, K-State has no definite starter at quarterback.
Ole Miss needs to find a replacement for Jevan Snead, who could bolt for the NFL after next year. Cotton is a very good runner and can be an effective passer. However he needs to work on his decision making and cut down on throwing interceptions.
PREDICTION: Ole Miss Rebels
Running Back: Bryce Brown
Brown, the nation's top recruit, will be pulling a Terrelle Pryor. Even though he committed to Miami last year, he is loosened his commitment and will be looking around at schools like Oregon, Missouri, Kansas State, USC, Clemson, Tennessee and Auburn.
Brown probably would have been Oregon's to lose had they landed Tajh Boyd, but since Boyd picked Clemson, it appears less likely he'll be suiting up for Oregon. Brown is a rare back. He has 4.4 speed, power, vision, and has a chance to break one every time he touches the ball.
PREDICTION: Oregon and Clemson will be on him hard, but in the end Brown will play for Miami.
Running Back: Trent Richardson
Richardson, who committed to Alabama in June, is having second thoughts. He is now looking at LSU, Florida, and FSU along with the Tide.
Richardson has great quickness, and has some power to him, too. It'll be interesting to see whether playing time is a factor. UF, Alabama and LSU all have running backs returning, but Richardson is the type of player who commands playing time right away.
PREDICTION: Richardson de-commits from the Tide and signs his LOI with LSU.
Runningback: David Oku
Oku is arguable the nation's top all-purpose back. He may not be big (5-foot-11, 185 pounds), but Oku has great speed, cutback ability, and vision. He can rack up yards in any way possible and rushed for over 5,800 yards and 68 touchdowns in his career.
He is a soft verbal commitment to Tennessee, but Auburn and Syracuse are in the mix. Auburn already has an all-purpose back coming in with Onterio McCalebb, so the battle seems like it's between UT and SU.
PREDICTION: Even though Syracuse now has former Tennessee running backs coach Stan Drayton, Oku has a chance to start right away and will be a Volunteer.
Running Back: Eddie Lacy
Lacy is a potential sleeper at running back. Overshadowed by in-state back Michael Ford, the Germantown, La. native had quite a nice year even though he played most of the year with a sprained MCL. Regardless, Lacy rushed for over 4,100 yards and 52 touchdownss in his three-year career. Lacy has good speed, vision and has power. However, he needs to improve on his change of direction and cutback ability.
Alabama, Tennessee and Ole Miss are recruiting him, and whoever wins will get a steal.
PREDICTION: If Trent Richardson does what I think he'll do, Lacy will sign with Alabama.
Wide Receiver: Rueben Randle
A phenomenal athlete, Randle—the top ranked wideout—played quarterback this season for his high school team! Randle is the top wideout in the class and whoever gets him should get a Julio Jones-type impact from him. Randle has the complete package. He's got good size, 4.5 speed, great hands and he'll make one team extremely happy.
Randle has narrowed his choices down to Alabama, LSU, Oklahoma, and Auburn. However, the final decision is expected to come down between LSU and Alabama, whom he is torn over. He wants to play with a great receiver and both schools have one (Alabama has Julio Jones, LSU has Brandon LaFell). He will have a tough time deciding on signing day.
PREDICTION: Julio Jones decided to stay home last signing day, and I think Randle will do the same. LSU Tigers
Wide Receiver: Patrick Patterson
Patterson is one of the fastest rising players in the 2009 class. Patterson broke out at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. Patterson has decent size with great hands, and can gain lots of yards after the catch. Patterson needs a little work on his route running but he will make one team very happy.
He has narrowed his list to four Alabama, Ole Miss, Southern Miss, and Tennessee. Alabama and Southern Miss will try to sell the fact he can part of a dynamic duo (Julio Jones at Alabama, DeAndre Brown at Southern Miss) while Ole Miss and Tennessee will focus him as the main guy.
PREDICTION: Patterson stays home and forms a dynamic duo with Shea Hodge. Ole Miss.
Wide Receiver: Marlon Brown
Brown has great hands, size, speed, and is very elusive. However, he needs to work on his blocking, route running and strength. He is nowhere near a project, though. Brown has a chance to be one of the great ones in this class, and he showed glimpses of his potential catching balls from Matt Barkley.
Brown will decide between Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, Ole Miss and Ohio State.
PREDICTION: Georgia Bulldogs
Wide Receiver: Justin Brown
This versatile athlete was All-Delaware at cornerback and wide receiver. He has his list narrowed down to Rutgers and Penn State, but this recruitment has been over for a while.
PREDICTION: Penn State Nittany Lions
Wide Receiver: Randall Carroll
Carroll is a fantastic athlete who can play both sides of the ball. He'll likely be a receiver in college and will be a fantastic haul for the team who gets him. USC had him as a commitment, but then he backed off with UCLA, Oklahoma, Arizona State, and Cal all coming on for his services.
PREDICTION: UCLA Bruins
Wide Receiver: Je'Ron Stokes
Stokes, one of the top prospects in the Northeast, has a nice combination of skills. He has good hands, speed and can beat a cornerback with any move. He has to get more physical, but that will come to an end once he enrolls in college. He is a soft verbal commitment to Tennessee, but hasn't visited UT since Lane Kiffin took over as Head Coach. He is looking at UGA, Florida, Maryland, Michigan, Penn State and Illinois.
PREDICTION: Michigan Wolverines
Wide Receiver: Kraig Appleton
Appleton is a receiver with decent size and good speed and hands. Appleton was a verbal commitment to Illinois, but backed off and will now decide between the Illini and Wisconsin.
PREDICTION: Wisconsin Badgers
Wide Receiver: Alshon Jeffrey
Jeffrey is a fantastic athlete and will decide between USC and South Carolina.
PREDICTION: USC Trojans
Wide Receiver: Kendall Kelly
Kelly is an All-Alabama wideout who has great size, speed, and hands. However, he needs to bulk up and improve his route running. He will decide between Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, LSU, Tennessee, Florida, and FSU.
PREDICTION: Alabama Crimson Tide
Tight End: Orson Charles
Charles is a freakish athlete and could play tight end or wide receiver in college. He will decide after signing day between UF, FSU, UGA, Tennessee, and USC.
PREDICTION: Georgia Bulldogs
Tight End: Zaccheus Mason
Mason is a great athlete. He is a two-sport athlete (he'll play football in college) and has over 30 offers for basketball. He'll decide between Memphis, Ole Miss, and Tennessee.
PREDICTION: Ole Miss Rebels
