The list seems to be getting shorter, but it's still a guessing game as to who will be the Montreal Canadiens next general manager.

As of Monday night, four names had surfaced as front-runners on "the short list."

Those people: Julien BriseBois, Pierre McGuire, Francois Giguere and Marc Bergevin.

BriseBois is currently the assistant general manager of the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Canadiens got permission through Lightning GM Steve Yzerman to talk to BriseBois. McGuire is currently a television hockey analyst on NBC and is a former NHL head coach, assistant coach and scout. It seems like those are the two guys pulling ahead in the race. But once again, it's only speculation.

For all we know, Giguere and Bergevin could be completely off the list and there could be two other names in their places. The Canadiens certainly aren't being public about their decision.

We know Detroit Red Wings credible assistant general manager Jim Nill is out due to family reasons. So he is one name we can cross off the list of potential candidates.

It has also been rumoured that Los Angeles' Luc Robitaille is also not interested in the position. And it seems agent Pat Brisson would much rather stick to managing his separate players, instead of the most storied franchise in NHL history.

The Canadiens are expected to make a position in the next week to give the new man in power time to prepare for the NHL draft on June 22.

As they hunt for a new general manager, the Habs are also on the lookout for a new head coach.

Patrick Roy's name has been passed around so much in the last couple of months that it's hard to ignore, but the new Habs' general manager should and will have the ability to select his own head coach. It wouldn't be right to select a head coach on behalf of a non-existent GM.

Each one of the general manager candidates will have his list of potential coaches. Speculating head coaches right now isn't something we can do. Except tossing names around randomly to see which one looks nice in front of the title "Montreal Canadiens head coach."

The timetable for the Montreal Canadiens will look something like this: hire general manager, hire head coach, draft third overall in the NHL Entry Draft, and then sign, sign, sign restricted free agents Carey Price, PK Subban, Lars Eller, Ryan White, Alexei Emelin, Raphael Diaz. Quite the list.

But remember, it's only speculation.
