According to sources, the Pittsburgh Steelers have give quarterback Ben Roethlisberger an eight-year-deal worth $102 million with roughly $36 million guaranteed.
Happy birthday, Ben. This signing comes one day after he turned 26 years old.
Roethlisberger had two years remaining on his rookie contract. He was set to earn $1.4 million in base salary in 2008. However, Roethlisberger has exceeded many expectations, leading Pittsburgh to a Super Bowl XL victory in just his second NFL season and an AFC North title in 2007.
Last year, Roethlisberger rebounded from a sub-par 2006 campaign by throwing for 32 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He excelled despite being sacked 47 times, the NFL's second-highest total behind Detroit's Jon Kitna (51).
The official announcement is expected sometime today.
