A Taste of the Big Leagues: WEC 170-Pound Champ Carlos Condit Headed to UFC
While a wrist injury sustained by Carlos Condit has forced the cancelation of the third defense of his WEC welterweight title, the injury could turn out to be a blessing in disguise.
According to FiveOuncesofPain.com, Condit will get his first taste of the big leagues as the latest addition to the UFC’s welterweight division. While the bout is yet to be finalized, Sam Caplan said Condit’s debut could come as soon as April 1 against Martin Kampmann at UFC Fight Night 18.
The departure of Condit, who closes out his WEC tenure at a squeaky clean 5-0, could lay the groundwork for the discontinuation of the WEC 170-pound division altogether.
If Zuffa’s WEC housecleaning—which already includes the elimination of its middleweight and light heavyweight division—extends to the welterweight division, it could open the door for the transfer of notable names such as Larson, Carlo Prater, Edgar Garcia, Hiromitsu Miura and Danillo Villefort.
For Condit, the transfer is one that is long overdue, as the 22-4 professional will finally get to test his wits against one of the UFC’s most talent-rich divisions, which includes top-flight competitors such as champion Georges St. Pierre, Thiago Alves, Josh Koscheck and Jon Fitch.
Beyond his perfect record in the WEC, Condit—a low-end top-10 welterweight—also holds victories over the likes of Frank Trigg, Renato Verissimo and Koji Oshi.
While none of the fights have been finalized by the UFC, other bouts on tap for UFN 18 include recent “Ultimate Fighter” winners Efrain Escudero and Ryan Bader competing against Jeremy Stephens and Carmelo Marrero, respectively. Other notable bouts include Tyson Griffin vs. Rafael dos Anjos, Ricardo Almeida vs. Matt Horwich and Junie Browning vs. Cole Miller.
