New York Giants: Mathias Kiwanuka Reportedly Signs 3-Year Contract Extension

Jun 7, 2018

The New York Giants signed one of their top defensive players to an extension on Friday.

According to Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News, DE/LB Mathias Kiwanuka has a new three-year deal:

"

DE Mathias Kiwanuka has apparently signed a three-year contract extension with the Giants, keeping him signed through the 2015 season. #NYG

Vacchiano passed along Kiwanuka's base salaries for the next couple seasons, according to the NFL Player's Association:

"

NFLPA website showing Kiwanuka's base salaries for next four years as $950,000 in 2012, $2.95M in 2013, $4.375 in 2014 and $4.775 in 2015.

The 29-year-old Kiwanuka has been with the G-Men for six seasons. He's coming off a year in which he had 84 tackles and 3.5 sacks. He was able to stay healthy the whole season a year after missing all but three games with a herniated disc.

Kiwanuka, a first-round pick back in 2006,ย won his second Super Bowl with the Giants this past season, though he didn't have a huge impact in New York's win over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI.

With Kiwanuka getting locked up for the next three seasons, the big question concerning the Giants right now is whether the team will also give star defensive end Osi Umenyiora an extension. Vacchiano says there's nothing to report on that front:

"

It does not appear the Mathias Kiwanuka extension is a sign of anything going on with Osi Umenyiora. Source says nothing is new. #NYG

Umenyiora's contract situation was the source of a lot of controversy during training camp last season. According to a recent report from The Star-Ledger, he's still not happy with his contract status.

It remains to be seen if the Giants will bow to Umenyiora's wishes, trade him, or just hope he plays out the final year of his contract in 2012.

For now, the Giants can rest easy knowing that at least one of their defensive standouts isn't going anywhere in the near future.
