I know I'm not the first person to come up with a new points system, but I have had an idea that would involve both the current points system and Bernie's medals idea. Basically, I propose this:

1st = 128 points
2nd = 64 points
3rd = 32 points
4th = 16 points
5th = 8 points
6th = 4 points
7th = 2 points
8th = 1 point

I think this way would place a greater emphasis on winning a race and finishing in a higher position, as moving one place higher will earn you twice as many points. Therefore, two second places have the same value as one win.

Unlike the medals system, this method would still reward consistency, which eliminates the situation where a driver who wins one race and crashes out of the rest would be classified higher than a driver who finishes in second in every race.

This system might result in some ridiculously large points totals at the end of the season, but I think it uses the good points from the medals idea and the current points system.

Under this points system, here is the top eight of the 2008 championship:

1) Felipe Massa: 974
2) Lewis Hamilton: 890
3) Kimi Raikkonen: 565
4) Robert Kubica: 467
5) Fernando Alonso: 410
6) Nick Heidfeld: 320
7) Heikki Kovalainen: 291
8) Sebastian Vettel: 178

It's only one change in position, but it is the most important one.
