The Notre Dame Fighting Irish entered spring with four quarterbacks battling for the top spot: Andrew Hendrix, Tommy Rees, Everett Golson and Gunner Kiel. Brian Kelly’s team now leaves spring ball with the same four young men vying for that spot.
While Everett Golson stood out in the spring game, none of the Irish quarterbacks truly gained the lead going into the summer season. While this is still a four horse race, it is better viewed as two leaders and two players pushing to get back even.
Golson and Tommy Rees seem to be the best two players for the job and it will take a monumental fall effort from Andrew Hendrix or Gunner Kiel to elbow their way to the lead for the start in Dublin, Ireland against Navy.
The positive for the Irish as they battle through quarterback uncertainty, is that their run game should be the focal point of the offense for the 2012 season.
