What is the worst loss a team has ever suffered? What is overkill? There has long since been a debate about when is the appropriate time to call off the dogs.
I watched a little bit of Mike and Mike on ESPN and they were discussing a loss suffered by a Girls High School Varsity Basketball team in Texas, with a score of 100-0. I agreed with the Mikes that a High School sports team is a place to learn and grow, not be humiliated. After all, high school is rough enough for some people.
But then I got to thinking about the pros and college, where it is your job to put it to the other team as much as you can. It is up to the coaches to show mercy, never the players. So I did some digging and came up with my list of the 10 worst beat downs ever to occur in sports.
10. 49ers 55, Broncos 10
January 28, 1990
NFL
This score is from Super Bowl XXIV. Isn’t a Super Bowl supposed to be the two best teams in the NFL squaring off? A 45-point blowout showed that the Niners were head and shoulders above the whole NFL.
9. Rangers 30, Orioles 3
August 22, 2007-
MLB
To score 30 runs in a baseball game is impressive. To score 30 runs in a baseball game and hold the other team to only three runs is total domination.
8. Cleveland Indians 22, New York Yankees 0
August 31, 2004
MLB
Scoreboard! The evil empire was dealt a major slice of humble pie in this shellacking. There is no better word to describe this game other than shellacking.
7. Ohio State 66, Indiana 12
March 12, 1905
NCAA Basketball
There was no shot clock. So why didn’t Indiana just try and hold onto the ball after a while? That’s a lot of defense especially in those short shorts.
6. Pittsburgh Pirates 22, Chicago Cubs 0
September 16, 1975
MLB
Oh poor Cubs fans. Something always seems to go wrong for this Chicago franchise, but on the 16th of September in 1975, everything went wrong.
5. Cleveland Cavaliers 148, Miami Heat 80
December 17, 1991
NBA
LeBron James and Dwayne Wade were both in elementary school when this game went down. With LeBron’s future Cavs dominating Wade’s future Heat by a margin of 68 points, the biggest margin of victory in NBA history
4. Chicago Bears 73, Washington Redskins 0
December 8, 1940
NFL
This was the NFL Championship Game, later known as a low-key event called the Super Bowl. It was the eighth championship game in NFL history, but it’s also the No. 1 beat down in NFL history.
3. Minnesota 106, Indiana 56
February 27, 1994
NCAA Basketball
The worst loss of Bob Knight's career, or of any NCAA Division I head basketball coach. Both teams were ranked in the top 25, but Indiana was ranked higher than Minnesota. Lets just say they were not ranked so high after this game.
2. Slovakia 82, Bulgaria 0
September 8, 2008
Women’s International Hockey
This was a pre-qualifying match for the Olympics! The women of Slovakia were in attack mode from the moment the puck dropped and the Bulgarian women were, uh…..not.
1. Georgia Tech 222, Cumberland College 0
October 7, 1916
NCAA Football
Wow. The beat down of all beat downs. The coach of Georgia Tech showed little or no restraint. It is one thing to be overmatched, but some serious effort was put forth to score that many points. I mean someone must have at least gotten a little tired on GT running the length of the field that many times.
