One More Time Around

What started out as a possible "dream team" turned into a nightmare as the Philadelphia Eagles struggled to win games, star players were unhappy with contract situations, and personnel on defense didn’t match what the coaching staff required them to do on the field. In short, head coach Andy Reid is lucky to still have his job, but he’s probably deserving of another chance because of all the success this franchise has had over the past decade.

Bounce back or breakdown

We should know early in the season if things have changed for the better in Philadelphia, as the defense clearly needs to adjust and offensive stars like Michael Vick and DeSean Jackson need to play more like they did in the 2010 season.

One player you can count on is LeSean McCoy, who—without Adrian Peterson at full health—may be the best running back in football. McCoy is helped by playing in an offense that fits his skill set, and even without Jason Peters (Achilles), he’s primed for another All-Pro season.

Where the loss of Peters will hurt is in pass protection as Vick has always had a problem with fleeing the pocket, so this may create a situation where tight end Brent Celek has to stay in and block more often, leaving the Eagles with one less eligible receiver in pass patterns.

On defense, the play of recently acquired DeMeco Ryans from Houston will be very important, but the question is, can Ryans return to his caliber of play he had before his injury a couple of years ago? Ryans struggled at times in the past, and there’s no guarantee Ryans will fully recover from his Achilles injury for the rest of his career.

Though it appeared the Eagles moved away from more wide-9 fronts at the end of the year, they are a defense that tends to rely more on pressure from the front four, so keep an eye on if they are using more blitz packages at the start of next season; if this group is going to the playoffs, it will obviously need the defense to play much better, however it chooses to use the personnel.
