2012 NFL Draft Prospects with Red Flags
When it comes to making the perfect draft pick, unfortunately there’s no secret formula. But teams can learn a lot about prospects by their workouts, interviews and taking a look at their off-the-field issues.
One of the most interesting case studies is Ryan Leaf. Considered by many to be the biggest draft bust in sports history. Not just in the NFL, but all of sports. Wow.
Back in 1998, the nation was swept up in a debate about Leaf or Peyton Manning going No. 1. Imagine if the Internet was prominent back then!
As fate would have it, Manning was selected No. 1 and Leaf was the second overall pick by the Chargers.
Yes, there were warning signs for Leaf. Not big ones, but they were there. According to Peter King of Sports Illustrated, the Colts held a pre-draft interview for both players. Manning excelled. Leaf was a no-show. Manning showed maturity. Leaf didn't. Some folks thought Manning had a much better arm.
Leaf played in the NFL for four seasons for four different teams. His locker-room tantrums are legendary. So is his police record as he currently faces burglary, theft and drug charges in his hometown of Great Falls, Montana.
Meanwhile, Manning is on his way to the Hall of Fame and possibly another Super Bowl run with the Denver Broncos.
