A 1-1 draw between Merseyside’s best saw Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez forced into another outburst all be it not to the magnitude seen previously this season.
The highly anticipated F.A Cup fourth round tie at Anfield saw Liverpool and Everton face each other for the second time in only a week. In the previous meeting, Everton took a well deserved point from their rivals through Tim Cahill’s late header. This result saw Liverpool lose ground on Manchester United at the table’s summit.
It was again Liverpool’s poor defending from a set piece that allowed Everton to this time lead at Anfield just as it had cost them victory seven days earlier. Cahill again was left to head at goal allowing Jolean Lescott to flick one past the helpless Reina.
Stephen Gerrard then fired Liverpool level after clever work from Fernando Torres, but despite late pressure they could not break down the impressive pairing of Lescott and Jagielka.
This provoked Benitez to criticise Everton’s game plan claiming they had no intention to win the game but only take a draw. He expressed his anger at having dominated all aspects of the game yet failing to make it straight into the next round.
Everton boss David Moyes responded to these claims by stating he has never gone into a game with the mentality of anything but winning. The Toffees will be full of optimism for the replay at Goodison Park as they look to intimidate Liverpool with a typically hostile atmosphere.
The replay will be played on the 4th of February with the winner facing a home tie with the winner of Aston Villa v Doncaster Rovers.
