Kiel almost throws a pick at the end there..
The game comes to a close and that's going to do it from South Bend-- 42-31 Gold. The Defense Team wins here.
There were certain aspects from this game to certainly be excited about if you're a Notre Dame fan.
The running game looked real strong, and tight end Tyler Eifert is arguably the top tight end in college football this season.
Of the four Irish quarterbacks, redshirt freshman Everett Golson was the most impressive of the group.
On defense, the secondary looked much better in this spring game, which is nice to see after they struggled so much at times last season.

Thanks for joining everyone!
Regular clock rules in the first half, running clock here in the second half.
Kiel stays in the game at quarterback.
Kiel looks raw. He has great zip on his passes, but you can tell that he just doesn't have a grasp on this offense yet.
It's not that Kiel has looked bad here on these two possessions, but I think it's probably fair to say that this is a thre way QB compeition at Notre Dame and Kiel is kind of on the outside looking in right now.
He has a lot to learn and pick up before he takes that next step.
Gunner Kiel in the game here on the first possession of the second half, completes a pass for 11 yards and then goes ahead and throws a terrible interception on his second play from scrimmage.
Defense now takes the lead 32-31.
You could see the zip on Kiel's passes, but not the start fans wanted to see from the most highly touted quarterback to play under head coach Brian Kelly.
Halftime--

George Atkinson with yet another huge run there, this one up the middle for 30 yards.
Sets up Cierre Wood for an 8 yard touchdown run there. He bounced to the outside, follows his blocks and cuts into the corner of the left side of the end zone there.
Great blocking by wide receivers there on that TD run.
Blue offense takes the lead now, 31-29 with less than a minute remaining until halftime.
With the exception of the fumbles, Notre Dame's running back duo of Atkinson and Wood look real good thus far and should be relied on heavily this season for the Irish.

Everett Golson fires a 19-yard touchdown strike to #6 Theo Riddick. Defender has his back to the WR and Riddick makes a great adjustment to make a nice catch there for the score.
Now 29-24, Gold Defense still on top.
Golson looks the most impressive of all quarterbacks thus far today.
He can run, he can throw, and he doesn't seem to make as many mistakes as Rees and even Hendrix thus far.

Reese may be third qb. Gholson's been impressive throwing the ball#ndspringgame

George Atkinson continues to impress but then goes ahead and fumbles again on an option pitch play.
It's tough to judge this guy because he looks so impressive but then goes ahead and fumbles the next play.
Andrew Hendrix takes over at qb and throws a bomb on the first play to big TE Tyler Eifert, looked like he caught it but the ball popped out at the end of the play for an incompletion.
Hendrix comes back two plays later and throws an interception right into the arms of the defense.. Interception was made by back LB Ishaq Williams.
Gold 29, Blue 17
Everett Golson back in at quarterback
Everett Golson looking very impressive in this offensive drive.
George Atkinson makes up for his fumble moments ago with a highlight reel run there for 30 yards. He made five people miss on that play.
Golson roles out to his right here, finds backup TE Ben Koyack in the right corner of the endzone for a touchdown.
Offense right back in it now, 19-17 is the score here after that TD score.
Golson looked very impressive, mixing several running plays with some crisp passes. This is a kid who has a live arm and should have every chance to be the starting quarterback of this Notre Dame football team.
Check out this tweet here...
Number 1 is the best quarterback ND got. He is shredding the 1st team defense. Everett Goldston. #NDSpringGame

Andrew Hendrix back in for the Blue team.
Nice run there by Hendrix on a planned QB keep. As announcer says, "this is an aspect that Tommy doesn't have in his game."
Hendrix fires a pass to Davaris Daniels over the middle for about 20 yards on a deep dig route.
George Atkinson, who had looked very good thus far, coughs up the ball there on a cutback run and the gold defense recovers.
Tough way to end what was looking like a good drive.
These are indeed the type of plays that hurt this team at times last season.

Tommy Rees had a nice drive going there, but then he had two terrible back to back passes from inside the 20 yard line.
The drive ends with a missed field goal attempt from 30 yards out.
Don't mean to be harsh on Rees thus far because this is a scrimmage and it is tough to make judgements in a game like this but Tommy Rees simply looks terrible thus far.
Both Andrew Hendrix and Everett Golson have outplayed him thus far, and we haven't even seen freshman sensation Gunner Kiel yet.

Offense tacks on a field goal there and defense gets rewarded one point for holding the offense to a field goal.
So, if you can grasp that, the score is now 15-10 for the Gold Team (defense) over the Blue Team (offense).
Tommy Rees back in at quarterback here.
Rees does a nice job at reading the defense and changing the play. Run by backup RB George Atkinson for a 10 yard first down on the first play of the drive.
Announcers are excited about George Atkinson and his ability to be a change of pace back for this powerful offense.
End of the first quarter.

Here are a few tweets thus far from today's game.
As you can see here, people are excited about Tyler Eifert, but not so pleased with how poor Rees is playing thus far
Tyler Eifert is going to be finding the end zone quite a bit this season.#NDSPRINGGAME

Bad pick by Rees #ndspringgame
#Rees in mid season form already I see. #ndspringgame

Hendirx takes over at quarterback and goes 3-and-out there on that offensive possession.
Gold 12, Blue 7-- Again scoring is very unconventional in this game. Only one touchdown and no field goals.
Blue is offense and Gold or White is on defense..
There wasn't a draft, instead it is just offense vs. defense.

Rees takes over at quarterback and throws an interception over the middle there. Ball was intended for Tyler Eifert over the middle and soared on Rees right into the arms of safety Matthies Farley.
Rees does not look good early on.
He is the starter as of now, but no doubt that there will be talk around campus after how poor he has looked early on.
Al Messerschmidt/Getty Images
Everett Golson in for the Blue team at quarterback now.
He looks really good early on. A lot of velocity on this throws and good speed. Golson just bounced outside for a 10 yard run and got popped as he went out of bounds. Big reaction there from that hit on Golson.
We just had a turnover there. 3 points for the defense.
Scoring is very unconventional in this game. 7-7 score, but only one touchdown scored.
Tommy Rees back in at quarterback now for the Blue Team.

Cierre Wood bounces for a big run on the first play of this offensive possession and then comes back two plays later and has another 20 yard big run to the outside.
After throwing an incompletion on his first pass, Hendrix comes back two plays later and throws a strike there for a touchdown pass to #80 Tyler Eifert. This tight end is going to be a special player for the Irish this season. Big expectations.
Tommy Rees drive ends in a punt. Andrew Hendrix drive ends with a touchdown strike to Tyler Eifert.
Hendrix with the early lead.

Blue offense on the field first.
Reese completes his first pass for a first down and then incomplete-- 3 and out.
A chance to see Manti Te'o now on the field now.

The Irish just took the field as Brian Kelly leads out the troops.
Camera focused in on senior All-American candidate Manti Te'o.
Now they are talking about this four-man quarterback competition. Irish fans have to be excited to see Gunner Kiel take the field today.

Notre Dame Spring Game set to kick off in about a half an hour.
Most of the focus will likely be on the play of the quarterbacks. Obviously, Tommy Rees has the upper hand to be the starter in his junior season. Rees served as the starter last season and has by far the most experience at the position.
But there will be a competition, make no mistake about it. The other quarterbacks in play to start are junior Andrew Hendrix, redshirt freshman Everett Golson and true freshman Gunner Kiel.
Kiel is one of the most highly touted freshman quarterbacks in program history. Numerous recruiting websites ranked Kiel as the top quarterback in the nation coming out of high school last season, so fans should get a glimpse of him and see if he has the skills to challenge Rees and the rest of the crew.
