Have a Little Faith: Ryan Rowland-Smith Set To Flirt with 3.00 ERA

As for the Mariners they have had one strength for a little while now it is in no way going to stop, young pitching. Right now the system has a few guys major league ready and one developed ace that is improving every season.

On a team that has two of the best young arms (Brandon Morrow and Felix Hernandez) it seems like Ryan Rowland-Smith always gets forgotten. But why? He is one of the best prospects in the majors when you look at his 2008 season.

In September, Rowland-Smith started in five games, in those games he posted a 3.06 ERA. After the all-star break he started 10 games, during that time span he received a 3.34 ERA.

The Mariners have four guys who can develop to the top of the rotation ace, not even counting Philipe Aumont or Michael Pineda. Here's how the future rotation is shaping.

Sp. Felix Hernandez
Sp. Brandon Morrow
Sp. Ryan Rowland-Smith
Sp. Philipe Aumont
Sp. Michael Pineda

I can't think of one rotation in the major leagues that can compare to what this rotation will be. If some of those players don't pan out the Mariners still have Juan Ramirez, Nathan Addock, Justin Thomas, and Jason Vargas.

Ryan Rowland-Smith just needs to work on pitching to left handed hitters and he can become a true top of the rotation guy.

However, this season the rotation looks a little different from my standpoint.

Sp. Felix Hernandez
Sp. Erik Bedard
Sp. Brandon Morrow
Sp. Ryan Rowland-Smith
Sp. Jarrod Washburn/ Carlos Silva/ Aaron Heilman/ Miguel Batista

There is going to be some fierce competition during spring training. Those of them not playing in the World Baseball Classic will have more opportunity to show Don Wakamatsu how nasty they are. But lets home our guys like King Felix don't forget where they have been and who raised them.
