“Stone Cold” Steve Austin is arguably the greatest WWE superstar to ever grace the ring. If the former World Champion was to return to wrestling one more time, it would have to be against John Cena.

As much as the WWE Universe wants the opponent for Stone Cold’s dream return match to be CM Punk, the smart move for the company is to have it be against the real face of the company, John Cena.

Austin was never the greatest technical wrestler, but he could work the mic with the best of them. While Punk is every bit as good as Cena as far as mic skills, the WWE knows for a fact that Cena can carry an older star through the main event of WrestleMania.

Just ask the Rock.

With WWE not wanting to miss out on the most possible exposure for a match, they will try to replicate the Cena/Rock feud from the road to WrestleMania 28 and the success it had by putting their proven commodity in Cena against the fan favorite Austin.

WWE Hall of Famer "Stone Cold" Steve Austin told Zoo Magazine about a possible return to the ring:

If the right situation, the right opponent and the right circumstances came up for the WWE, then it would certainly be something worth considering. Could I have another match or two? Yeah. Physically I am in really good shape right now. People seem to think I am half-dead!.. In my movies, I do some pretty hellacious fight scenes that, maybe, a normal person couldn’t do. So my physicality is fine, my neck is fine after having it all fused-up. I am not pitching for another match but if it was a win-win situation for everybody, then absolutely, I would consider it.

As perfect as the straight-edge CM Punk vs. the beer-drinking Stone Cold would be, the truth is that WWE is doing that storyline right now. While it’s true that they could make Punk the heel for this feud, if he is still a face when it goes down, the storyline will be a complete mess.

The WWE could still feud Punk and Austin, but without alcohol as the main focus of the feud, they’re essentially the same anti-hero character. Having them brawl would be a waste, unless Stone Cold is the heel.

Again, unlikely.

That honestly only leaves two men big enough in the mainstream to put in a match against the Texas rattlesnake; John Cena and The Undertaker. While a feud between Austin and Undertaker would be amazing for older WWE fans, the slowed action and mediocre payoff match would spoil the whole WrestleMania.

Cena it is. With the ability to work a WWE-style match as good as anyone in the company, carry older stars like he did The Rock at WrestleMania 28 and his mainstream appeal, a feud with Stone Cold Steve Austin would be even bigger than this year’s ‘Mania main event.
