10 Best Ridiculously Tall Players in World Football
It's not easy playing football when you're tall.
Many people think tall players are too slow, or their reactions aren't sharp enough. Others think they're lazy because they don't cover as much ground as more mobile players, and some just enjoy watching them carve out a living as national treasures.
Hate them or love them, tall players are here to stay in the world of football, and here are some of the more noticeable players in the professional leagues today.
Nikola Zigic is reportedly 6'7.5'' tall and is the standout striker—in more ways than one—for the Serbian national team.
Zigic has formerly played in the Premier League for Birmingham City.
Stefan Maierhofer can match Nikola Zigic for height, but not quite for ability.
Maierhofer is an Austrian international who failed to make the grade at Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Peter Crouch has the best footwork for a player over 6'5'' that I have ever seen.
Standing 6'7'' tall, Crouch has a superb goalscoring record for England with 22 goals in 42 appearances.
Euro 2012 anyone?
A relative midget in this pantheon of over-sized footballers, Llorente has displaced Fernando Torres in the Spanish international set-up.
Llorente stands at 6'5'' tall and plays his domestic football for Athletic Bilbao.
Liverpool's Andy Carroll is valued at £35 million—by someone—making him the most expensive player on this list by far.
Carroll stands at 6'3'' tall according to Wikipedia, but his presence and jumping ability make him seem more like a 6'5'' player.
Wikipedia declares Christopher Samba is 6'4'' tall, but I'm not convinced that's accurate.
The Congolese defender recently forced through a move from Blackburn Rovers to Russian outfit Anzhi Makhachkala, but his presence on the pitch makes him seem much larger than declared.
Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker is 6'6'' tall and unfortunately looks every inch of it.
Slightly cumbersome on the run, Mertesacker is a fine header of the ball and represents the German national side on occasion.
Above is the picture of his swollen ankle after he fell and twisted it during a Premier League game.
Kristof Van Hout
Kristof Van Hout is reported to be the tallest professional football player in the world and he stands at a mighty 6'10'' tall.
The goalkeeper currently plies his trade for K.V. Kortrijk in the Belgian Pro League after moving from better-known Standard Liege.
6'6'' Zat Knight has been a consistent defender for Bolton Wanderers over the years and is often over-looked as one of their standout performers.
Knight played for Fulham and Aston Villa before finding his calling at Bolton, and he has two England caps to his name.
Tor Hogne Aaroy
Tor Hogne Aaroy is the world's tallest outfield professional footballer player and stands at 6'8.5'' tall.
Currently playing in the Japanese J-League division 2 for JEF United, Aaroy towers above all and sundry and has struck five times in 16 league games to date.
Tall players can really influence any part of a team except the midfield.
You just don't see 6'5'' guys running around in the centre of midfield, or out on the wings.
Their strength is usually their strength. That and a deadly ability to head the ball makes them a force to be reckoned with at any level.
