Ibrahim Afellay was given medical clearance by FC Barcelona's medical service. He is able to return to La Blaugrana after a lengthy recovery from a tear in the anterior cruciate ligament of the left knee.
While this is great news, Afellay has his work cut out for him with the remaining La Liga BBVA matches. The same applies for the UEFA Champions League (UCL) matches against Chelsea.
Will Afellay be able to help La Blaugrana in the remaining La Liga BBVA season? Can he help in the UCL matches?
He is able to make a difference even with the presence of Lionel Messi and Cristian Tello on the field. He can continue his recovery efforts by playing gradually so as not to apply pressure on the left knee.
Afellay can help Messi and Tello by crossing the ball towards them in midfield. He can also use his right leg in order to kick the ball towards Pedro Rodriguez and Alexis Sanchez.
The possibility exists for Afellay to be used as a substitute for the last minutes of a match in La Liga BBVA or UEFA Champions League. It remains to be seen whether Afellay is up to the task at large.
