Michael Vick will be an MVP candidate in 2012. That statement may sound like a bit of a surprise to a lot of people after Vick struggled in 2011. So why am I so confident in that statement?
Well, there are a lot of reasons to be confident in Michael Vick. First, I think even the most skeptical person would agree that Vick has made giant strides as a quarterback for the Eagles. Vick has become a much more accurate passer, has made better decisions with the football and has learned to play the quarterback position at a higher level than he ever did in Atlanta.
Most people would also agree that Vick is an extremely gifted athlete, and his ability to create with his legs makes him a dual threat with both his feet and his arm.
Vick has also made giant strides as a football player. He has become a student of the game, he studied film, he learns about the other team's defense, which are things he admittedly never did in Atlanta.
What Vick has not had was a full offseason as the Eagles starting quarterback. Due to the lockout, Vick missed out on a real offseason of OTAs and practices last season. This year, he has the benefit of full access to Andy Reid and the Eagles facilities for a whole offseason. That will make a huge difference.
Vick also has another year of running this offense under his belt, which will only help him. He also has a huge upgrade in his receiving corps, not by addition, but by the new contract of Desean Jackson.
The Eagles had Jackson last year, but they had a tentative Jackson that did not want to get hurt. This year, they will have the game-changing Jackson back, and that will only help Vick's numbers.
It is also being stated that second-year center Jason Kelce will be calling the offensive line protections this season, something Vick had to do last year. If Kelce takes over that responsibility, that should only help Vick focus more on the offense and moving the football.
They also bring back LeSean McCoy with a new contract. While they did have McCoy last season, McCoy is still a young player and should be entering the prime of his career. A stable running game will only help Vick excel.
So the Eagles will contend in 2012 and Vick will lead the way with an MVP-caliber season. The only thing left to worry about is whether it will be enough to hoist the Lombardi trophy and forever make Michael Vick an Eagles legend.
