The Longest Mock Draft in NFL History Continues...
I have my people working strenuously, putting together the best feedback from the Mock Draft series to hopefully make the best feedback column (or the most entertaining, anyway) in the history of the Internet.
The feedback column will consist of the best of the comments section as well as my favorite email from the Mock Draft series. So keep the feedback coming—both the good and the bad. Just make it entertaining, and try to keep it PG-13.
My mother reads this, for crying out loud.
Pick No. 15: Detroit Lions
I was going through my archives, trying to remember what I thought of the Detroit Lions as the season progressed. I’ve done this with all the teams in the draft so far to help point me towards a player or a position that will best help them improve.
Sometimes we make problems seem bigger than they really were at the time, or forget the major issues that dogged a team throughout the season. So going back and looking at what I thought at the time helps sort out what really caused teams like the Lions to disappoint.
Two things jumped out at me from what I wrote about the Lions over the course of the season:
1) I can’t believe Mike Martz got another job in the NFL.
What the heck were the 49ers thinking?
He completely forgot about the running game for long stretches of the season. And I don’t mean “New England Patriots” forgot about the running game—it appeared that Martz actually forgot the quarterback was allowed to hand the ball to a running back.
He completely destroyed the offense. He went away from their best offensive weapons repeatedly. He featured Shaun McDonald over his other weapons in big moments because...I don't know. He used to be a Ram?
I’d come up with a better reason, but I can’t think of one.
In short, he was stubborn, he was egotistical, he was pompous, and worst of all he was a bad offensive coordinator. A horrifyingly bad offensive coordinator.
Seriously, what the heck were the 49ers thinking?
2) Apparently, God was too busy miraculously curing their quarterback’s concussions to give them a real defense.
The Lions had some serious defensive issues. The biggest of which was their secondary.
There were times when passing against their defense was so easy, you almost forgot they were actually fielding a secondary.
With that in mind, God told Jon Kitna that Detroit should pick a cornerback.
The Pick: Aqib Talib, CB, Kansas
This is the best compliment I can give Aqib: I am really hoping that he somehow ends up in a Patriots’ uniform.
He’s big, he can cover, and he can run. He has all of the physical tools to become a great NFL cornerback.
He is the long awaited replacement for Dre Bly—heck, he could be better than Dre Bly.
Detroit needs to get serious on defense if this year’s ridiculous win total prediction by Kitna is going to come true.
Aqib Talib is going to be a serious NFL cornerback.
