With Detroit Red Wings All-Stars Pavel Datsyuk and Nicklas Lidstrom out of the game due to various injuries, the NHL announced San Jose Sharks captain Patrick Marleau and Dallas Stars defenseman Stephane Robidas as their replacements.
Robidas will be taking part at his first All-Star Game in Montreal. Having played as a Canadien during his career, Robidas added that playing in Montreal would be something very special.
Marleau will be taking part in his second career All-Star Game. He was also part of the 2003-04 All-Star Game.
As well, the YoungStars Game has a number of injuries to players such as Milan Lucic, while other players felt they needed some time off. Those players include Columbus Blue Jackets rookie netminder Steve Mason and Washington Capitals forward Nicklas Backstrom.
Backstrom commented that "[he] felt like it made more sense for [him] to give someone else that opportunity and use this time to rest and prepare for the second half of the season with the Washington Capitals."
In for Backstrom and Lucic are St. Louis Blues forward David Perron and Chicago Blackhawks forward David Bolland.
Along with Mason, Los Angeles Kings goalie Erik Eriksberg has decided not to take part and will be replaced by Eastern Conference starter Carey Price of the Montreal Canadiens while Mason will be replaced by Nashville Predators goalie Pekka Rinne.
The All-Star Game kicks off this weekend with the game set for Sunday in Montreal.
