ACC Giving Big East a Run for Its Money
Anyone who has watched an ESPN college basketball halftime report this season has heard one consistent opinion from the on-camera experts: The Big East is the premier conference in college basketball.
The last few weeks, however, seem to indicate that the ACC isn't about to give in to popular opinion. While the Big East lays claim to the most Top-25 teams in college basketball, it's the ACC teams making headlines.
A little over a week ago, the ACC had three of the top four ranked teams in the nation. Until this past Saturday, two of the final three undefeated teams were ACC teams (Wake and Clemson), and it took a game between them to change that.
Saturday also saw a marquee matchup between two of the best teams from each conference, Duke and Georgetown.
While Duke was the favorite team in terms of ranking, the Devils' relative ease of victory (securing a lead midway through the first half and never relinquishing it) came as a surprise for many, if not most, who thought Big East powerhouse Georgetown was upset worthy.
The ACC currently has the top two ranked teams in the nation with Wake Forest and Duke, respectively. It has the only undefeated team in the country in Wake Forest. It also has the nation's most popular choice to win it all in North Carolina.
So while the Big East can boast about having the most teams represented in the Top-25, the ACC can beat its chest right back because, though March will ultimately decide which conference is king, January has belonged to the ACC.
