Just a day after it was announced that newly acquired closer Andrew Bailey would require thumb surgery that would sideline him for the first half of the season, manager Bobby Valentine announced that Alfredo Aceves will be the closer, according to Gordon Edes of ESPN.

Aceves had been competing for a spot in the starting rotation this spring but was slotted in the bullpen after Felix Doubront and Daniel Bard were awarded the No. 4 and 5 roles.
