Mets Avoid Arbitration With Duaner Sanchez

Phil HoopsCorrespondent IJanuary 19, 2009

ESPN is reporting that the Mets have avoided arbitration with 29 year old reliever Duaner Sanchez.

Sanchez and the team have agreed upon a 1 year deal worth $ 1.6875 million.

Last season, Sanchez picked up 21 holds, which ranked 9th in the National League.

His breakout season with the club came in the first half of the 2006 season, in which he posted an impressive 2.60 ERA before suffering a shoulder injury in a taxicab accident.

The Mets are hoping that this year he can return to a shadow of himself and help solidify a bullpen that is already anchored by Francisco Rodriguez and J.J. Putz.

Sanchez will be a free agent following the 2009 season.
