National Teams in Formula One? I'm Still Not Sold
Formula One is an international sport that transcends borders and has people of all stripes and colours cheering for a team that may be based in a country they have no connection to whatsoever.
However, something that has been bothering me for a while now is the notion of Force India. It used to be Jordan, then bought by Midland which subsequently sold it to Spyker Cars, and was finally bought by Vijay Mallya to become the team that it is known as today.
At least its future is secure in terms of having a backer, but the name has always been a bother. Force India.
I'm not targeting India; I'm targeting the inclusion of a nationality in a sport where diversity is huge and borders are almost nonexistent.
Why should a team be named after a country here? If you want countries, go to A1GP where they belong.
I feel that Dr. Mallya, while he believes his intentions are good by being patriotic and loving his country, is sending the wrong message to Formula One fans by unintentionally alienating the team.
Dr. Mallya could also be pushing back potential sponsors for his team, but it's pretty obvious that they don't really need sponsors.
However, when you look at the Force India website, you see that there's only one Indian among the key personnel: Vijay Mallya. The other personnel are mainly English.
This, I have found to be is unintentional alienation by Dr. Mallya, and if he wanted to bring in more fans to his fledgling Formula One enterprise, he would probably be better off renaming it to something like Kingfisher.
I do hope that this team doesn't fail like its predecessors, but I think that the Force India name probably was not the best idea.
