It has been a trying month for football fans all over the world, having seen Fabrice Muamba’s cardiac arrest whilst playing against Tottenham and Eric Abidal’s liver transplant.

Now Aston Villa’s official website has revealed that their star midfielder Stiliyan Petrov has been diagnosed with acute leukaemia.

Here is a segment of the official report:

“We expect to learn more about Stiliyan's situation in due course and we have moved quickly to support him and his family.

During this time we ask that Stiliyan's privacy is placed ahead of all inquiries and trust that we will share information as we receive it.”

The 32-year-old has been at Aston Villa since 2006 after joining them from Scottish giants Celtic. He has appeared in over 200 games for Villa and is a cult figure among fans.

All we can do is hope and pray that he will win his battle with leukaemia. Our thoughts should be with him and his family during these difficult times.
