The NFL announced today the 2012 NFL Kickoff game featuring the defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants hosting the NFC East rival Dallas Cowboys at MetLife Stadium.

The game is scheduled to be broadcast on NBC, Wednesday, Sept. 5 at 8:30 p.m.

According to ESPN, this is the ninth year in a row the NFL has opened the season with a game hosted by the defending Super Bowl winners.

The opener is typically held on a Thursday evening, but 2012's game was moved to Wednesday due to a scheduling conflict with President Barack Obama's speech at the Democratic National Convention set for Sept. 6.
