My first article suffered a backlash I did not expect after posting a story stating my opinion on why Kobe Bryant should not win the Most Valuable Player award this year.
Though some of the remarks where from unabashed Lakers fanatics with a blind eye; many pointed out that I was very biased and relied heavily on character attacks to state my point.
To this, my response to all the Kobe lovers, I will back up my earlier statement for Kobe Bryant not being the MVP this year.
Let us look at five players who deserve consideration this year for the award:
Steve Nash, PG, Suns
Key Stats: 17.6 Ppg, 11.5 Apg Team Record '08: 39-18 Team Record '07: 61-21
A former two-time winner, Nash could never be counted out of his race, as he is the most integral part of his team.
With minor injuries keeping Grant Hill and Amare Stoudamire out for short stretches this year, and with the acquisition of Shaquille O'Neal, Nash has responded by matching career highs in assists per game and maintaining his team high level of game.
Kevin Garnett, PF, Celtics
Key Stats: 18.5 Ppg, 9.7 Rpg Team Record '08: 43-12 Team Record '07: 24-58
The arrival of Garnett in Boston has changed the face of his franchise and seriously challenges the top-tier teams in the East.
While his numbers are down from earlier on in his career, the true effect on this team can be felt on the defensive end of the court.
Before his injury, Boston allowed opponents to score 100 points only five times in 42 games.
Since his absence, the Celtics are 7-5, and have allowed 100 points six times.
The greatest indication of the affect of having Garnett around is the Celtics record against the all-mighty Western conference, 18-3.
Chris Paul, PG, Hornets
Key Stats: 20.7 Ppg 10.7 Apg Team Record '08: 37-18 Team Record '07: 39-43
In only his third year, Chris Paul has become a force to be reckoned with in the league.
While improving on all key stats, he has led his team to the fourth best record in the always tough West.
While teams like the Suns, Lakers, Spurs, and Mavericks have multiple weapons to rely on, the Hornets rely more heavily on Paul then most other teams, with the offense flowing through him.
In him, the NBA has found the next great point guard.
Lebron James, SF, Cavaliers
Key Stats: 30.2 Ppg 8.1 Rpg 7.5 Apg Team Record '08: 32-25 Team Record '07: 50-32
We can state our case for Lebron as MVP, just on statistics alone.
He is having a season we have rarely seen before.
He is arguably the best player in the league, but what makes him a front runner for the MVP, is what he means to his team.
With no real number two option in the offence, Lebron has kept them near the top of the conference.
The recent additions of the likes of Ben Wallace, Joe Smith and Wally Szerbiak, should help cement their position going into the playoffs, but LeBron will still have to burden the offensive pressure, and has shown little signs of letting up.
Kobe Bryant, SG, Lakers
Key Stats: 27.8 Ppg 5.4 Apg Team Record 08: 40-17 Team Record 07: 42-40
Times have been tough since Shaquille O'Neal left a few years ago, but Kobe Bryant has managed to climb his Lakers back into contention with the Western Conferences best record to date this season.
Surrounded by his best supporting cast in years, he has become less of a one-man team and more of a leader.
Playing through an injury, he has maintained his high level of play, and his Lakers should be a force in the playoffs.
And the winner is....
All these players deserve consideration for the award of MVP, but only one can walk away with it.
While Lebron and Kobe can make interesting cases for themselves by being leaders, and Garnett has changed the face of a franchise, the clear front runner must be the man in New Orleans, Chris Paul.
While all other names in this list and there teams were considered to be playoff contenders at the beginning of the year, Paul has lead his team to near the top of the standings, while putting up great numbers for a point guard.
So there you have it, Kobe Bryant is NOT your MVP, though a close second with LeBron James, the award should be on Chris Paul's mantle come July.

lol, its just my response to an article by Micheal Smith, where the title is, "Lets be honest, Kobe Bryant is the MVP"

And the "lol" is also frequently used by writers making finely reasoned arguments. Well done.

Kobe ain't Michael Jordan!
LeBron owns Kobe. Kobe fears LeBron.
Kobe will not surpass MJ but LeBron has now surpassed Kobe.
LeBron's only 23 years old, yet he still dominates Kobe every single time.

I agree that Chris Paul is a front runner for the award this year. But, it is quite obvious that Kobe Bryant is the best player in the league and it is a crime that he has never won the MVP Award. So, If I was handing out the award today my MVP would be Kobe simply out of respect. He is putting up a comparable performance to any other "hotshot" in the league and he has been doing it for years. He has deserved this award for a long time and this year is as good a time as anyfor him to recieve it. And for the record- Steve Nash and the Suns are my favorite team.

My lord, do you Laker fans ever watch any games other then those with your beloved Kobe?
While Kobe merits a lot of mention in this race, Paul is if not in the lead, he is at least on par with Kobe and LeBron.
All i am saying, is stop the anointing of Kobe as the MVP because he is not the only one in the race, hell i dont even believe he is leading it.

I am a LeBron and Kobe hater. LeBron because he is sooo over rated and I don't like his game. Kobe, because while he is the best in the game, hes a punk. Whiney prima dona rapist punk. And while I go back and forth trying to reason my way out of thinking Kobe is the MVP...I really can't. He is. Lets all face it. I try and tell myself because they weren't the a top 2 team in the L until the trade, thats the reason. Buuut, they were damn good. And Kobe was the reason. His shots this yr are WAY down, because hes learning to share the spotlight and pick his times of attack. It was when Jordan learned this that he became god, and a 6 time champion. Whiles Kobe's always talked the talk, hes now learning to walk the walk that team accomplishments ARE more important than individual.
LeBron? Pssht. He is maybe 5th on my list. He dominates the ball too much, doesn't give teamates a chance to be 100% engaged on both ends of the floor. No doubt he will get there ppl, but hes not there yet. As much as the NBA likes to market its superstars, this is a team game. Without the team, you don't win. Kobe used to be like that too, but hes come around this yr.
So while i hate to say it, its MVP Kobe Bryant this yr.

Matt-
Let me help you out here a little.
1) Don't emphatically state he does NOT deserve the MVP and then say he's a close second.
2) Don't bring your personal feelings about Kobe into the argument or your readers will bring their personal feelings about you into it.
3) If you wanna make the case for Chris Paul, then try writing an article called "Chris Paul Should Be the MVP" instead.
4) If you do wanna make the case for Paul, don't do it while his team is in the middle of a 3-game losing streak.
5) If you look like an ass after part 1, don't write a part 2 and make yourself look like more of an ass because you spent a few hours studying stats on the internet.
6) Read Bill Plaschke's column in today's LA Times: http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-plaschke27feb27,1,5045287,full.column
Nobody has ever been more critical of Kobe than Plaschke. Hear what he has to say about his MVP chances, his leadership transformation and his ability to make his teammates better.
7) Don't post your comments 3 times. It makes you look like even more of a novice.

why does lebron get a close second not to take anything away from him hes a great player but saying he a close second because his team cant put up points without him and the stat that matters win without him and people are saying he should get the mvp.but i remember when kobe was putting up 35 points a game and had to score a bunch a points while some of the players that we had that season were still devloping and were rookies kobe had to carry the load by his self with little help maybe none.so if people say lebron or any body should get the mvp because of there importance to that team and saying the offence runs through them and have to score all the points then that means kobe should have got it in the 05-06 season and if youb go by how far that player takes the team then kobe should still get it.because look at the standings 1st place kobe has done great things for the nba whether people want to admit it or not kobe has been the best player in the league for a while ask anybody that doesnt hate him, even lebron admitted it and hes a player that people say is better than kobe so him saying that means something shaq says it his about his ex teammate so i think kobe is overdue for a mvp so kobe haters get over it!

Listen guys, the title is nothing more then a play on Michael SMith's article title, and while the first piece i wrote is clearly a pile of poo as far as me being biased against Bryant, my opinion is that Kobe is not the MVP in the league, i dont put him out of the consideration, but i believe that Paul should win, and a little losing streak will not stop that thinking.
Unless the Hornets completely, Paul should remain the front runner.
If they do implode, then Kobe should deserve it.
Untl then my opinion is my opinion.

Oh and notice i did not use the stats as a basis for deciding who i think should be the MVP, because if i did then LeBron would be an easy choice.

This one is a "little" better.. if you had actually attempted to present an argument in your "part 1" instead of act like a troll on a message board and pass it off as some kind of article, you wouldn't be facing a so-called "backlash" (when it was just some people trying to put some sense into your lack of objective analysis).
and "My lord, do you Laker fans ever watch any games other then those with your beloved Kobe?"
LOL! This coming from a guy who admittedly doesn't wasn't many laker games because he is on the east coast and then writes an "article" making a case for Kobe not being the MVP. As the person above said, you want to make an argument for Paul (who clearly is a player in the race, which I mentioned in my response to your part 1), do it responsibly.. not Kobe is "NOT" the MVP.

hehe this is just another ho-hum writer that wanted to make a fuss so more and more people read the column. NBA is boring without Kobe, whether it is the denver case or his 81 points or his trade demand or his position as the strong candidate for MVP plus NBA champion. So, this is always the favorite topic for them. Kobe is not MVP, Kobe will never win anything, LeBron is better, Nash is better, Spurs is better etc etc etc
For Kobe fans, you will not be able to stop this kind of writers to write whatever they want to write. Everyone wants their 15 minutes of fame.

Lebron James? are you kidding me his team is what 5 games above 500 in the East. THE EAST. the cavs went to finals last year. theyre 5 games ahead of washington who have been without their ace all year. do you guys remember the laker predictions for this year 8th spot or missing the playoffs and they have the number one spot the the west. THE WEST. and who does kobe have sasha vujacik who does steve nash have to pass the ball to umm amare, shaq and marion for most of the year, im sure i could rack up assists playing with those guys. stop your kobe hating he deserves it this year if any.
lebron has the ball in his hand 95 percent of the game he runs around trying to get layups or dunks and when he cant finish he passes out thats why his stats are so "good" whenever he plays a team with a good center like oh say the spurs in the finals (4-0) his game is exposed. the spurs have three all stars on their team and kobes lakers have a better record
7 months ago
did you see the olympic trials when kobes team beat lebrons team now id say those games were even matched and kobe owned lebron also with lebron us team wins bronze with kobe theyre getting gold. lebron doesnt play defense and he cant shoot he needs the ball in his hands and play a team without a good center

Who is talking about LeBron, i think Chris Paul should be the MVP.
Attack me all you want, please dispell the fact that Chris Paul should not be the MVP.
Wait
"Unless the Hornets completely, Paul should remain the front runner.
If they do implode, then Kobe should deserve it."
That can have 2 meanings, #1 Kobe is undeserving of the MVP award now and will only become deserving once the Hornets go down in the playoff seeding. #2 You think that the choice after Paul is Kobe....but earlier you said that LeBron is a close second to Paul.
Personally I would pick Paul right now as well. But I would understand Kobe getting the MVP as he is deserving. LeBron shouldn't get the award (great stats on a avg team at best). Paul is having an amazing season and carrying players who had a tough time winning elsewhere to a high seed in the Western Conference. But lets not pretend Paul has nobody to help. He has the vastly underrated David West, amazing shooter in Peja, Solid rebounder and finisher of alley-oops in Chandler.
The thing is, I think it should be between Kobe and Paul. Kobe has the Dirk syndrome, and Paul has the Nash syndrome. Kobe is like Dirk from last year, leading a team of good players to a very high seed in the Western Conference, while having a HUGE impact on his team and the league along the way. Paul is like Nash from the 2 years before, he is the orchestrator of the offense and is a 20-10 guy except with assists. Paul and Kobe both get it done on the defensive end, Paul gets more steals, Kobe plays better face up D. Conclusion, nobody should mind if either Paul or Kobe gets it. Paul has my vote though, with Kobe a close second. LeBron is 4th behind KG.
How can anybody take you seriously when you misspell dispel? Also, you claim that it's a "fact that Chris Paul should not be the MVP." First of all, the MVP is an award that isn't determined yet, so there's no fact here. Second, you just said that "Chris Paul should be the MVP," then you followed it by saying it's a fact that "Chris Paul should not be the MVP."
Are you really that confused or that bad of a writer?
Anyways, Chris Paul is an MVP candidate, but many analysts are choosing Kobe for the simple fact (and this is a fact) that the Lakers have the best record in the NBA. Moreover, we've had serious injuries to our team (Bynum, Mihm, Ariza) while the Hornets have been relatively injury-free. Talent-wise, the Hornets have a great roster. Tyson Chandler averages 12 and 12. Bynum averages 13 and 10. Gasol and West are a wash. Peja is a 3-time all-star. Odom has a star shaved on his head. Farmar is our bench, but the Hornets have Pargo and (used to have) Bobby Jackson, two guys who score off the bench.
Pretty fair, right? Except the Lakers haven't had Bynum and Pau together. Take Chandler off the team for the last month and a half and then Chris Paul can be compared to Kobe. Otherwise, no.

wow....again, what a desperate attempt at trying to redeem yourself from your failed first attempt. just like the guy above said: by rushing to create a part 2, you belie the fact that you're a novice who only tried to compensate your lack of analytical skills by spending an hour looking over stats on the net without actually understanding them themselves and the various contexts (history, team records, etc...) in the first place.

I wrote these two articles wanting to make my point as to why Bryant is not the clear favorite in the MVP race. in MY opinion.
Instead of wasting your time blasting peole on boards, why dont you relax and just not read anything that seems derogatory to your Lord Kobe.
We arent paid to do this, we sign up because we want to share our opinions with others, if you dont agree with them, think they are off-base, then please write a reasonable rebute. No reason to get into vulgarity over a stupid game like basketball.

"We arent paid to do this"
Yes, we can tell. You're a hack who can't spell or put together proper grammar.
Did you ever stop to think that many of the people who are supporting Kobe Bryant for MVP actually don't worship him? Maybe, just maybe, some of these people are able to objectively evaluate basketball talent and have deducted that this year he is overwhelmingly deserving of the MVP award... And maybe they don't like that some douchebag like yourself can put together this POS two-part "article" , which is clearly trying to incite people, without any sense of reason or accountability.
Seriously, just give up before you are buried even further. It's obvious by your selected comment responses that you still have no firm ground to stand on... To claim that anyone who disagrees with you is just a "Kobe Lover" just further validates how dumb you are.
"It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt."

Man are you a moron. I thought you are a Kobe hater, but you are too uninformed to be one. You don't even understand the NBA. Steve Nash is a top 5 MVP leader? Are you serious? Have you even heard of the word defense? Nash is a horrible, HORRIBLE defender. Defense is half of the game in case you weren't aware. I bad defender should not even be considered for MVP. Kobe will be first team all NBA offense and defense this year, second team defense at worst. Print it, it is a guarantee. No one in the NBA would argue that Nash is a better ofensive player than Kobe, and no one in the world would argue that he is a better defender. Hmmmmmmmm worse on both ends, (MVP candidate my a$$) Nash and Nowitzki are the two biggest MVP jokes in history. (Both won because of the anti-Kobe vote I might add). Do a little research, watch a few games, then start typing again, because you just don't get it and you are embarassing yourself.
And before you start the "I must be a Kobelover" comments, I would not be upset if LBJ, Chris Paul, or KG were to win this year. All three are deserving for their play THIS Year. As a matter of fact, KG deserves to win each year. Period. But Nash? Really, you look like a fool with that one. (As do the Nash voters of the past).

the nba and media seriously loves lebron. here are just two, albeit minor, of the most recent examples:
1) the other day when the cavs lost to the bucks, the nba.com recap quoted lebron saying that there were questionable calls. then immediately following that quote, the writer said something to the effect of "however, lebron did not blame the loss on the officials" (i'm going off memory here). what is this? is the writer just trying so hard to force lebron's "grand" character onto us by juxtaposing these two claims that are completely contradictory? jeez, the media's gotta stop protecting lebron.
2) on today's nba.com home page, one of the headlines reads "celtics cruise, but lebron get's 10,000". if this were kobe, it would have read "kobe get's 10,000, but celtics cruise". this isn't simply a matter of word order. there is a completely different insinuation between the two phrases, and the former is a lebron love-fest while the latter is the ever so popular kobe hate-fest.

Lebron has great individual stats but MVP awards are not determined by stats (proven by Kobe's outrageous stats the last few years). MVP's must lead their TEAMS to WIN! Lebron's team, unfortunately, is currently ranked a measly 13th in the league right now. As we all know, if Lebron's team were in the Western Conference, the Cavs wouldn't even make the playoffs. Sad. In my book, before Lebron can be considered a legitimate candidate for the MVP award, He needs to help his team WIN more (no excuses).
If anyone should be considered along with Kobe as MVP, it should be Chris Paul. CP3's TEAM is WINNING (ranked 5th overall in the NBA), and Paul has great individual stats to back it up. He makes his teammates better AND is a great defensive player averaging almost 3 steals a game. He shuts down and embarrasses Nash every time the two play. (BTW, why have all of the MVP players in the last 3 years been such defensive liabilities? That's a disgrace to the award as an MVP candidate must show extreme value to their team on BOTH ends of the floor.)
Bottom line, this year, Kobe and CP3 are leading their teams to W's! In the end, that's all that matters. These two, should be the leading candidates for MVP.

You state that Chris Paul is the most deserved MVP candidate based on how well his team has done this season, but lets not forget that Paul thus far this season has had one of the easiest runs in the NBA to date. The strength of the Hornets schedule has been the sixth easiest in the entire NBA with it getting tougher in the weeks ahead, so if Paul can manage to keep his team afloat in the approaching hard times then he can be considered the forerunner for the MVP. Just for note Kobe Bryant's Laker's have had the 4rth hardest schedule in the NBA to date. To verify this argument refer to espn. In addition another thing voters should remember is that the Laker's reached the top of the west just prior to the All Star break (and Pau Gasol) before the injury to Bynum cost them the lead. So all in all Kobe should be MVP this year beacause he has added the dimensions which have cost him in the past ("good team record" and "makes his teamates better") with Paul a close second provided he can perform in the weeks to come. Forget Lebron this year because his team is only just above 50% and if he were in the West would it be a stretch to think that Lebron's Cavs would be below 50%. That is Lebron loses out based on the Kobe Bryant Rule (Good Stats, Poor Team).

do u really think the lakers were considered playoff contenders to start the season? unless u were delusional i think not kobe clearly deserves it more than paul or lebron for that matter kobe is playing on the number 1 team in the brutal west (keep in mind if the lakers were as bad as they were the past 2 seasons then they wouldnt even be in the bottom of the playoff seeds in the west) lebrons doing the same thing kobe has the past 2 years: put up amazing stats while playing on a crappy team KOBE=MVP

DUDE, Please write a whole series for this: Part 3,4,5,6. Maybe you can go up to part 29 and write why a player on every other team deserves it more than Kobe.
Imagine: Wade for MVP, because without him, the Heat would only have 5 wins, instead of 10!
or : Eddie House for MVP, because the Celtics have the best record, and House has only missed one game, Plus the team won a few games without Garnett.
Any way you decide to go, make sure you keep coming up with reasons why Kobe shouldn't be MVP.
Oh. and make sure you don't add that if you ask any player in the NBA, even those in contention for the MVP, who they think should be MVP, they will all say Kobe, like they always do, it will make your argument look really pointless.
Keep it up Matt

I hate hearing all these laker fanboys spamming kobe for mvp. Definitley not. garnett or duncan would be the best player on the best team(garnet with best team statistically), paul made the biggest impact to improve his team the most, and lebron's the best individually statistically. Wheres kobe even fit in.......Kobe sucks

MVPs don't throw their teammates and front office under the bus, then pout and sulk for the first part of the season and only stop doing so when they realize that the guys they threw under the bus (Bynum for sure) aren't as terrible as you made them out to be.
