New Mexico Lobos "Pit": A Great Home Arena

“The Pit”, home of the New Mexico Lobos, is easily a top five arena in college basketball, and it is proven to be the loudest. We’ve won three in a row here, so we’ve had some great success.

I won three out of four years there, so I have great memories in this place. I believe BYU has the best student section in the MWC, but the Lobos have the best overall fans. The place is sold out all the time—even in down years!

When they have 15,000 seats that they can fill up constantly, that is impressive. If you ever find yourself in Albuquerque during the winter, you have to see a game.  "The Pit” is built underground, and I think this adds to the acoustics of it.

New Mexico has an older guy who leads the student section. He is called “The Snake,” because he hisses at opposing teams. ”The Snake” is small, but tattooed from head to toe. He sits by the visitors bench, and is relentless.  He calls out things about families, religion, and other topics.

It feels great to win, look right at “The Snake,” and smile. We are classy, and wish him better luck next year!

Keys to the game:

-Get out on the three point shot, especially on Toppert

-Control Tony Dandridge’s penetration. No layups!
