Kharma vs. Beth Phoenix for the WWE Diva's Championship was my choice all year for Wrestle Mania. It was the only match with the females worthy of the grand stage, and both could wrestle a great match.
Natalya Neidhart vs. Phoenix never did it for me. Seeing that now would be pointless.
Thus, WWE didn't have too many options for April 1st, 2012.
Kelly Kelly and Eve Torres have been going back and forth for a few weeks, but I didn't sense the use of seeing them in a single's match. It wouldn't last long and likely wouldn't accomplish much.
What was WWE to do?
1. Bring back Madusa: No thank you. Adding her would not make a single one of you pay the $50 for the show, so why even bother? She is a good talent but shouldn't be in a WWE ring again.
2. Bring back Trish Stratus or Lita: This falls very close to a "fantasy booking" that I choose to stay far away from. It isn't happening, so there is no need to discuss it for weeks on end.
3. Bring in a celebrity: This was the last logical choice. Perez Hilton did fine with the women awhile back. If Snooki wasn't pregnant, I have no doubts she'd be back.
Who else was left for WWE?
You have to laugh at all the fans saying "Who?" at the show. Clearly, the WWE Universe knows who this is, so even joking about her status is ridiculous.
Maria did a great job hosting Raw in 2009, and she just defeated the current champion on the "Tribute to the Troops" show a few months ago. Of course wrestling fans know her.
On top of that, she performed perfectly fine inside the ring (just like Snooki). If she had messed up a lot or bad-mouthed the company, I would understand the backlash.
She wrestled decent matches and has spoken extremely well of the business many times. Additionally, Maria is a beautiful woman with major press each and every day around her.
Can somebody tell me the problem again?
Oh yeah, there is none.
The fact is the Diva's Division needed something for Mania. They have to have a segment, so WWE went with their best possibility.
She will bring some attention to the divas and will help promote the show to a mass audience. With her talk show and appearance on Dancing with the Stars, millions of fans are going to be made aware of her match in Miami.
Once again, what is so wrong with that?
WWE is setting out to make this the biggest, most successful event in its history.
It is going to be a tough task.
I wish her luck in Miami. Eve and Beth vs. Maria Menounos and Kelly Kelly may not seem like a huge match, but it is just another layer to an already amazing card at Wrestle Mania XXVIII.
