A wild free-agency period has taken yet another dramatic turn with ESPN analyst Adam Schefter reporting that San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith is set to visit the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.

Reports around San Francisco throughout the offseason thus far had led many to believe that they were closing in on a deal to retain the services of the quarterback who led them to within a field goal of an unprecedented Super Bowl birth.

News broke late on Friday that the San Francisco 49ers had become players in the Peyton Manning sweepstakes, and inevitably, a flurry of speculation began to erupt over the contractual status of Alex Smith.

It appears now that Alex Smith may be allowed to walk, suggesting that perhaps the 49ers are confident that Manning will be playing at Candlestick Park next season.

Oddly, Alex Smith and Peyton Manning share the same agent, and perhaps Tom Condon promoting Smith to test the waters of free agency is indicative of the opinion that Manning is rumoured to land with the 49ers.

Speculation will be rife as more news breaks, though what cannot be doubted is that this may prove to be a costly move for the 49ers if both Smith and Manning fall through their grasps.
