Real Madrid's manager Jose Mourinho is sometimes portrayed as the Darth Vader of football.

But Mourinho displayed a more compassionate side in comments regarding Barcelona defender Eric Abidal's necessary liver transplant.

"We all know that we are all together," Mourinho said, "There is no Real Madrid or Barca, no colours, just a young man who everyone hopes will have a fantastic life."

"Abidal is a fantastic guy, who has had a great career. If he can play again, wonderful; you have to applaud him. If he cannot because it is very serious, we just have to wish him a long and happy life."

Mourinho's voice is the latest in an outpouring of support for Abidal following Barcelona's announcement of his illness.
