FC Barcelona: Ranking the Top 11 Players

0 of 12

The current La Liga and UEFA Champions League season is drawing to a close. The time has come to rate the top 11 players of FC Barcelona during the current season.

They were selected based on their contributions and their flaws. The classifications will be on the basis of one to 10, with 10 being the highest.

The reasons for the rating will be present in this slideshow. So sit back, relax and let the slideshow begin.

1. Lionel Messi

1 of 12

Leo Messi is a household name in FC Barcelona and the world. During the current La Liga season (before the Barca match against Sevilla, according to ESPN Soccernet), he had 30 goals, eight assists and 132 shots in 25 matches.

Messi made history in the UEFA Champions League match against Bayer Leverkusen by scoring five goals. He has participated in the La Liga, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup for Barca.

While Messi has been criticized by Pele, FC Barcelona president Sandro Rosell praised Messi and said that there will never be another one like him. It is true since Messi is also a true athlete off as well as on the field.

Messi once said that Pep Guardiola (FC Barcelona manager) is the actual personality in the club.

The rank for Messi is 9/10.

2. Cesc Fabregas and Alexis Sanchez

2 of 12

Cesc Fabregas and Alexis Sanchez signed with FC Barcelona during the 2011 Summer Transfer WIndow. They have not failed to leave a lasting imprint on the 2011-2012 La Liga season.

    Cesc Fabregas

Fabregas returned to Barca from Arsenal after an eight-year spell with the Gunners. His record with FC Barcelona (according to ESPN Soccernet) was nine goals, eight assists and 38 shots in 21 matches as of March 17, 2012.

Fabregas participated in the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and El Clasico for FC Barcelona.

He is deserving of the ranking of 9/10.

    Alexis Sanchez

Sanchez is a young player who was signed from Udinese during the 2011 Summer Transfer Windiow. He has also impressed with his participation in the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and El Clasico.

According to the FC Barcelona website, Sanchez has the speed and agility required in football matches. He has also provided crosses for other players and took advantage of the opposing team's weakness to score.

Sanchez also deserves a ranking of 9/10.

3. Gerard Pique

3 of 12

Gerard Pique is one of the greatest football players in FC Barcelona. He participated and contributed to the victories of La Blaugrana in La Liga, El Clasico, UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Super Cup.

While Pique is one of the greatest in Barca history, there have been some problems in the year 2012. According to an article by fellow BR writer Adam Wells with a h/t to The Inqusitr, Pique has had problems with FC Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola.

The problem centers on an alleged infraction of rules by Pique. One of the infractions mentioned is water rafting (with his girlfriend Shakira), which is prohibited in the rules of La Blaugrana.

The prohibition on water rafting is logical given the potential danger of the activity. In the year 2010 (according to a report by the Charleston Gazette), a water-rafting accident occurred in the Gauley River in West Virginia which resulted in two deaths.

The situation was further complicated when Telemadrid published a report about a rift between Pique and Guardiola.

The Telemadrid report was rebuffed by FC Barcelona president Sandro Rosell. I am in agreement with Adam Wells that Shakira is not to blame for what is happening with Pique.

While watching Barca facing Sevilla in the March 17 match, Pique appeared to lack coordination in his style of play. Pique has to get his act together or FC Barcelona may reconsider his services.

He will receive a ranking of 6.5/10 for the infraction of water rafting.

4. Cristian Tello

4 of 12

Cristian Tello is one of the recent faces in FC Barcelona. He has left an initial impression with La Blaugrana with his two goals in the UEFA Champions League match against Bayer Leverkusen.

The story of Tello is one that is beginning to be written. The written word cannot describe what is present in the video concerning Cristian Tello.

Tello receives a ranking of 9.5/10.

5. Pedro Rodriguez

5 of 12

Pedro is another talent in FC Barcelona. He participated in the UEFA Champions League, La Liga, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and the Spanish Super Cup.

I am learning more about Pedro as time evolves. He is going to be one of the players of Barca's future.

Pedro receives a score of 9.5/10.

6. Jose Manuel Pinto

6 of 12

Jose Manuel Pinto is one of the goalkeepers with FC Barcelona. He was present at the FC Barcelona vs. Chivas of Guadalajara match in Miami, Fla., in August 2011.

Pinto is now almost 40 years old and (according to ESPN Soccernet) he has been an unused substitute for more than a month.

While he is one of the greatest goalkeepers of FC Barcelona, the question that arises is this: Should he continue, or is it time to retire?

Pinto receives a rank of 7/10.

7. Adriano

7 of 12

Adriano is another personality in the FC Barcelona team who is quick and versatile in his style of play. According to ESPN Soccernet, Adriano is weak when it comes to tackling during a match.

During the 2011-2012 La Liga season (according to ESPN Soccernet),  Adriano had one goal, three assists and 11 shots in 15 matches.

Adriano deserves to be ranked with an 8.5/10.

8. Xavi Hernandez

8 of 12

Xavi Hernandez scored the first goal in the match between FC Barcelona and Sevilla with precision. His record (according to ESPN Soccernet) is six assists, eight goals and 29 shots in 22 matches.

As a midfielder, Hernandez is able to help Barca in situations where others are unable to do so in defense and offense. Hernandez is 32 years old and may not be able to have the energy that a younger player may have.

    His rating is 8/10.

9. Isaac Cuenca

9 of 12

Isaac Cuenca is a rising star in FC Barcelona along with Christian Tello and Pedro. His record with FC Barcelona during the 2011-2012 La Liga Season (according to ESPN Soccernet) is one goal, one assist and 12 shots in 12 matches.

Cuenca is a threat when it comes to passing the ball, but weak when it comes to defense. It remains to be seen what will happen to Cuenca.

    His rank is 8.5/10

10. Ibrahim Affelay

10 of 12

Ibrahim Affelay has not played for FC Barcelona since his cruciate ligament in his left knee received severe damage in September 2011. According to the UEFA web page, Affelay damaged his knee during training.

It remains to be seen whether he can fully recover from his injury. According to the FC Barcelona website, Afellay is resuming light training.

I read fellow B/R writer Anurag Bhatt's slideshow concerning Afellay. The article dealt with players who Barca can transfer this summer.

It would serve Barca's interest to release Affelay in favor of another player. Afellay will not get a rank since he is out because of injury.

11. Sergio Busquets

11 of 12

Sergio Busquets deserves to be mentioned in the top 11 of FC Barcelona players. Busquets is a midfielder who is calm, cool and collected during a match up to a point.

Busquets has the weakness of diving and making a spectacle of himself during the match. It is a pity that Busquets relies at times on theatrics.

Busquets deserves the rank of 5.5/10 for the theatrics.

Conclusion

12 of 12

The attempt to rank the top 11 players of FC Barcelona is not an easy task. The public and supporters of FC Barcelona may have their own criteria to rank players different from this slideshow.

The slideshow comes to an end with this heart-warming rendition of the FC Barcelona hymn by the Spanish singer Gisela. My thanks to the fans of B/R for visiting the slideshow.

My best wishes to the B/R and general public.
