Mario Williams Buffalo Bills Press Conference: 'Hopefully I Get the Sacks'

Erik FrenzJun 3, 2018

Bills general manager Buddy Nix said at Thursday's press conference that signing defensive end Mario Williams was the team's "No. 1 goal" in free agency.

It's no secret why. The team looks to convert to a 4-3 defense despite having a true 4-3 defensive end on the roster.

Not anymore.

And now, with the news of his signing official, the Bills have the potential to be one of the best four-man defensive lines in the NFL.

Williams himself is excited about the possibilities, and why shouldn't he be? He gets to line up next to defensive tackles Kyle Williams and Marcel Dareus. That should be a dream for any defensive end, and Super Mario isn't afraid to admit that it was an important factor in his decision to join the Bills.

"

"It was huge," Williams said in a press conference that was broadcast live on BuffaloBills.com. "I know those guys, and like I said, having coach Kollar for three years, that's all he ever talks about is how great Kyle [Williams] is...I know what we have inside, and the biggest thing for a defensive end is looking to when you get around that edge, the quarterback not stepping up...so that was one huge sell, to me, was having those two guys pushing the pocket, and hopefully I get the sacks."

"

The importance of a defensive end like Williams can't be understated for that very reason: As good as Dareus and Williams are, they needed a true 4-3 defensive end to bring the heat. The Bills only logged 29 sacks in 2011.

They figure to get a few more than that with Williams coming off the edge in 2012.

He knows he's not the only piece to the puzzle. That being said, he knows the Bills aren't too far off, especially after Buffalo's hot start to the 2011 season.

"

"Last year...we all were like, 'Wow, look, they're 5-0, they've got something going on over there.' But the injury bug hit here just like it did [with the Houston Texans], and some key players were missing and things like that. It's here, we saw that last year from the beginning of the season. The [important] thing is maintaining that and keeping it going."
