Track and Field? More Like Lack and Yield

In today's society of technology and green living, why do we even bother exerting the energy required for some event wildly popularized by the Romans in some chauvinist attempt to conquer? 

If we, as good Americans really want to conserve energy, we should let this antiquated fad dissolve into obscurity and try to forget that it ever existed in the first place.
